Hey guys, I've heard a lot of people saying Japan is like America (in terms of things to buy, houses, TV etc). After visiting Japan I beg to differ... I personaly think Taiwan is more like America.

Anyone else got an opinion? Which out of the two is Asia's America?

I have never been to Taiwan but I do know that Japan is not like America. The ideas and beliefs and completely different....the people are COMPLETELY different.

See, I'd disagree. I'd say there are lots of similarities between the people. At times, they're frighteningly similar.

Haha, I've frequently told people that I think Taiwan is more like Japan than the US. It depends on what your bases for comparison are. All in all, though, it's a pretty useless comparison, I think.

When I first arrived and saw all the convenience stores everywhere my first thought was that Japan looked as I'd imagined America would look, but after a couple of years that and the US-style diners everywhere are probably the only similarities I still expect, but I've ever been to America so can't say for sure.

The OP is Vallilo, using his alias Elliot_Spencer. He's one of the biggest polluters of pointless threads to this forum, and should be banished!

Isn't human made cheese the only cheese we should be eating? I mean, milk from cows? Are we, moo, cows? ^_^

There are a lot of things we probably shouldn't be eating. Some may say that we shouldn't be eating anything that has to be processed, cooked, or otherwise altered before consumption. From a biological stand point, one might say it is just unnatural. However - we DO have the ability to cook, process, squeeze juice, and to milk! So I say - viva the cheese!!!!!!!!!!!

One point that you could say they are very similar is the us and them mentality regarding their own country and the outside world. When I went to America I found a shocking level of ignorance about the world outside of America. Ofcourse there are ignorant people evrywhere but compared to European countries the level of ignorance in Japan and America is noticable.

Where did you go in America? It depends a lot on where you go as to what kind of people you will meet.
But I would say that where I am from, the people are very closed minded and unaware of the outside world. But that is not the difference I was talking about, I was talking about the fact that Americans think of themselves first (I can say that because I am American). From my experience it seems like Japanese will let their boss treat them badly and not do anything about it.....They also don't seem as arrogant as Americans. They are also ALOT more hard working...They differences in attitudes are huge.

Japan's like the US in the same way that Australia is like Indonesia. Sure, there are some similarities but generally, no, they're nothing like each other.

Well, for what it is worth, the OP qualified his/her statement in materialistic terms, not cultural. I think the referrence is referring to the fact that Japan is an advanced, modern, and affluent society, similar to America.
