'42 Held, Armenian Injured in Clashes
By David Nowak
Staff Writer
Dozens of ultranationalists armed with metal poles and broken bottles attacked people from the Caucasus and Central Asia at two squares near the Kremlin and a third location Friday night, raising fears of an escalation in ethnic violence.
One ethnic Armenian was hospitalized with stab wounds and 42 people were detained in the clashes, city police said.'
This is the lead for an article from yesterday's Moscow Times. Just for your information, people from the Caucasus have darker (not black) skin
than the average Russian so they easily stand out. This makes them easy targets on the streets, in the metro, etc. Russia can be quite dangerous no matter what the PC crowd says. |

Back home in Fresno there seems to be a drive by shooting every week at least. I am not PC, but it makes me miss Bibirevo. That having been said, the warden messages one gets from time to time on the internet (after you register with the consulate) are quite apropos, people are well advised to give skin-heads and ultranationalists a wide berth.
I think that in any country, it is not a good idea to hang around demonstrations to see if anything interesting is in the offing. You could find out the hard way. |
