Is being a Football Hooligan from the Land of the Angles a positive trait in the classroom ? An astonishing number of Saudi students are 'au fait' with English Football. I suppose it is one of the few real interests that our charges have.
Personally I rather disapprove of my colleagues who show up for class wearing their 'football colours'. Maybe I would feel differently if they wore Rangers or Aberdeen strips. |

Well, well well, whoda thunk that our Scot was a Hun.
I suggest you take a walk down the Shankhill Road in West Belfast. You'll see more Rangers shirts than at Ibrox on a home day. |

I can show you parts of Donegal where Glaswegian is more widely understood than English !
Both sides of the sectarian divide in Ireland have Scottish connections !
And my preference for Scottish strips is not confined to Rangers. I would even accept Glasgow Celtic or Hibernian ! |

No, Mr Scot, I do not think Football Hooligan is a positive trait in the classroom. It is a negative trait, and has nothing to do with classroom or teaching.
Football hooligans tend to come from the lower-working class social groups, and sometimes, especially the Scottish and English fans, behave outside the acceptable norms of life (especially abroad!).

The majority of young Saudis are divided between Al-Itihad and Al-Aahli. |

Hi Scot47 and Cleopatra
In my limited experience i found that being a football fan was one of the few things i had in common with the students in KSA and in Libya
Along with "coffee break" ...."David Beckam" ....needs no translation.
However, I'm curious about what kind of place allows teachers to turn up in football shirts.....sounds very relaxed.
As to Rangers shirts in West Belfast...you'll find that they are just as common in East Belfast......and the Scots-Irish connections as I'm sure you're both aware are long standing, slightly more complicated than most of the world's media allows for, and have the added complication of living in the shadow of English/European power politics...historically speaking.
So, most football fans in N. Ireland support a local team...a Scottish team...and an English team.....
many of the Libyans I knew supported European teams..eg Juventus..or Barcelona....and a colleague of mine in KSA regularly used a game called "grammar football" to secure the interest of his otherwise reluctant students .
long live the "beautiful game" |

Scots-Irish connections? Do you mean "Ulster-Scot connection?
Can we say that Scot47 and Cleo have Ulster-Scot connection?
It seems they have the same patriotic cause

But now they are leaving under a Scottish master, his Excellency the Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who is very well know Scottish.
So, there is no excuse from Scot47 or Abinara to complain from the English/European power politics. |

Abinara is right. Male Saudis are au fait with European football and anybody coming here to teach them might find it useful to familiarise himself with the Saudi soccer scene. His students will appreciate it and it will provide material for discussion.
Interesting that Scot47 titles his post English Football Hooligans. Our latest embarrassment here in Spain was the visit of the 'Gers to Pamplona. Ineptitude on the pitch and boorishness on the terraces. |

No, you most definitely cannot say that. |

That may have been true once upon a time, but the prices to most top flight games now excludes the majority of the lower working classes. |

Cleo is a left-footer. Ulster Scots are generally of the other persuasion.
I consider myself to be in the long tradition of Presbyterian Republicans. |

Scot47, could you elaborate more.
Do you mean that Cleo is from the tribe of the Catholic farm workers who use their left foot to push the spade when digging, and Mr Scot47 is from the tribe of Protestants who use their right foot to push the spade.
Long life to The United Irish movement. |

Well, if you say so...

I've always found it interesting how many armchair Republicans are not in fact Irish, and may indeed never have been to the country. A bit like all those 'passionate Zionists' in New York and Chicago. |

We seem to have strayed far from the OP's question about teachers wearing Chelsea FC strips in class.
Acceptable or not ? |

Not acceptable.
But compared to some of the classroom shenanigans I hear about every day, paying for the privilege of advertising Emirates Airlines is a relatively mild offence. |

The ones advertising Newcastle Brown, McEwan's Export and Tennant's Lager should DEFINITELY be banned. |
