G'day folks,
I know this question has been asked before and I have tried doing a search through the FAQ and search buttons but there appears to be a glitch with my search,so I have decided to ask you the tediously repeated question again.
Is HK 17,000 a month a good salary to live on in HK? mind you, this is a base salary the organisation is offering teachers with less than two years experience;the salary is incremental with years of experience.
Accomodation is already covered for by the organisation.
Thanks in advance.
John. |

$17k is ok, especially if accomodation is included.
Of course - as has been mentioned many times on this board - it does depend on your lifestyle.
(really, a mod should make up a thread about living expenses in Hk and make a sticky out of it - the same questions pop up regualrly!)
If you want to spend your weeeekends in Wan Chai or LKF, then you'll find $17k insufficient.
If you prefer not to go out partying each and every weekend then you'll get by.
Most ex-pats here working in tutorial centres are on less than $20k (and don't get accomodation). They manage to survive - I did when I first got here.
It's only NETs, ESFs and Int School teachers who get more than $30k. |

Thanks for responding Smoog,
I'm no boozer like I once was. These days I would rather hang out at a coffee shop,do Yoga, exercise, read a book or surf the net rather than party on.I agree with alcohol, but it does not agree with me like it used to.Besides,I will be too busy working and won't have much time to party.Since you mention Wan Chai, that is where I will be staying. |

I think you need to read a bit more carefully. According to another poster who says he/she works for VTC, the accommodation is in Chai Wan, not Wan Chai. Both on HK Island, but VERy different places! |

Hi BC,
You are right,I made a mistake;it is Chai Wan and not Wan Chai. Can you or anybody else recommend a good online interactive map of Hong Kong, with all the suburbs?
Thanks folks. |

17000 seems very very low. However I made quite a bit less in my early years doing ESL in Bangkok. I would think you would definatly need to keep a low profile. |
