Hey there! I realize I don't live there, but I thought I would put my two cents in since I was just in Oaxaca City this past Tuesday...

I went to Oaxaca for my honeymoon. We were in Oaxaca City itself Monday through Thursday the week before last, and then again This past Tuesday. I guess we had missed the start of things heating up by not being there over the weekend, but I could see there was some lingering energy in the Zocalo when we got back. However, I NEVER felt unsafe in Oaxaca City. NONE of the tension seemed directed towards us at all. There were signs in English apologizing for the "inconveniences" and explaining how much the vendors want to welcome visitors back to their city "with open arms".

Anyways, Oaxaca was great. We felt safer walking around downtown at night than I would in my current hometown (Jacksonville, FL). The people both in Oaxaca City and throughout the other towns we visited in Oaxaca state were amazingly friendly.

Thanks, Mama Oaxaca for your wonderful advice. The trip was everything we hoped it would be and more. I know I will return to Oaxaca again.
