TO THE FORUM:

I did a Forum search for American Higher Education (AHEd) in UAE. I came up empty.

Please advise and comment on the following:

I applied for a position as a Business English Instructor through "Jobs in Dubai, Inc." (a Canadian corporation). Here's the ad I responded to:

"Our client, American Higher Education (AHEd) exports educational programs of U.S. universities to the UAE. They work only with the top 100 universities in the U.S. who offer academic programs, online and onsite, to meet the needs of international students who reside outside of the U.S. AHEd is opening its own Centers in Summer 2006 in Dubai and the UAE states to offer degree and certificate programs from partner institutions.

Our client is seeking to hire Business English Instructors for corporate clients as well as open enrollment programs for their new learning centers in Dubai.

Job Qualifications:

- Bachelor or Master's degree in a relevant field,
- Strong verbal and written communication skills,
- Understanding of grammar and business writing
- Familiarity with current business trends,
- Comfortable working in formal, corporate environment
- Understanding of different cultural backgrounds
- Corporate training background preferred

END AD

According to Jobs in Dubai, Inc., I'm highly qualified. They said they made this determination after the client (American Higher Education (AHEd)) reviewed my resume. I have no reason to doubt the integrity and sincerity of "Jobs in Dubai, Inc.," or the client.

I'm a little concerned that Jobs in Dubai, Inc. requires a refundable deposit before I can pursue the position. The deposit is $34 USD.

My specific questions are:

Does anyone have any detailed information about the client (American Higher Education (AHEd)) in Dubai / UAE? The website is not helpful regarding details of the Dubai operation.

Since the ad provided no salary / benefits information, what might I expect in compensation? (NOTE: I have two MS degrees (International Business and Engineering), a BS in Engineering, as well as experience as a Corporate Trainer and university lecturer.)

Does Jobs in Dubai's requirement for a deposit cause anyone any alarm?

Any other commentary is appreciated. Thank you!

Hi,

I have heard that jobs in Dubai is legit, but definitely don't sign up with them just for this job with American Higher Ed. This company was based in Knowledge Village, and just closed down their Dubai office about a week ago.

Good luck

From my experience I know that training companies do not run year round business communication courses; rather, they compete for short term contracts, i.e. teachers are hired locally and as part timers.

As a general rule, I would say to avoid recruiters in the Emirates. Always avoid a recruiter that makes you pay anything, almost all of them are scams. In the Gulf, you go directly to the employers and apply.

Janeee, et. al.,

Thank you for this critical information.

I also appreciate the info from the other members.

I contacted "Jobs in Dubai, Inc." regarding your information. I haven't received a reply in over 24 hours. They were very quick to approve my resume and ask for a deposit, but when confronted, they are not so prompt.

I believe this thread is important for the archives, and I will continue to add to it as I receive additional information.

Thanks, again!

This post is an update to my application for a Business English Instructor with American Higher Education (AHEd) in UAE.

As a reminder, I applied for this position through "Jobs in Dubai, Inc.," a Canadian corporation.

Given Janeee's information that AHEd closed their Dubai office, I immediately confronted Jobs in Dubai, Inc. I politely informed them of Janeee's information, and asked if the position(s) is still available.

I regret to report the response from Jobs in Dubai, Inc. was inadequate. They would not answer the questions about the position, nor would they comment on AHEd closing their Dubai office. I'm sorry to report their response was totally focused on reminding me to "pay the deposit."

An additional inquiry to Jobs in Dubai, Inc. (strongly worded) resulted in the following response (verbatim):

Kindly note that this employer is still registered with
us and there are two job postings in our website as
well..

Also I wish to inform you that if you are looking for
the position of English Instructors, there are some
positions available with another employer, SOS, and
I give below the job posting for your informaiton (sic). If
you wish, we could forward your resume right away,
since they are hiring for this particular position
immediately. The job posting is given below.

-----------------------------------------------
"Job Type: Teaching Instructors
Job Category: Education / Training
Location:Kuwait
Reference #:TRN-0037

Our Partner SOS Recruitment Consultants is an
Executive Search & Selection Consultancy that acts
on behalf of client companies. Their primary
function is to source the most suitable candidates
that fulfil their client's requirements.

Job Description:
Our client, A large government training institute, is
seeking to recruit English Native Speakers
Instructors, with Bachelor/Master degree in English
Language, The Ideal candidate must be a Native
Speaker and must have a minimum of experience
of 4 yrs in teaching English language to Non English
Native Speakers. The Candidate must have
TESOL /CELTA Certification. The incumbent will be
teaching English to military personnels (Non native
Speakers). "

Since I am not looking for a job in Kuwait, I found their response to be inadequate.

MY CONCLUSION: Beware of job advertisements on Jobs in Dubai, Inc. IMHO, they are more interested in receiving a deposit than posting jobs that are current and available.

From my experience applying for the managing director of American Higher Education (AHEd) based in Dubai, Jobs In Dubai - does not take off FILLED positions in a timely manner.

I did not bother joining JiD rather called the HQ in Boston directly and found out the job was filled already.

Best to do your research - and contact the target directly.

"That's what gets results. It aint what you do but the way that you do it.... "
