Hi,

Buddy applied for a position here and they contacted him indicating them that they had his vitae and that they were sorting through names to interview. This was whithin the last month. Since then, I've seen them advertise a couple of more times. Once for the same positions, it appears, and another time for some sort of corporate teaching gigs.

At any rate, what's the dope on this place?

For instance, salary, what are the hours-per week, housing (and quality of housing) like?

Do they offer air fare reimbursement?

Are there academic responsibilities (do instructors have to publish and attend conferences?),

Do they offer private office space for their instructors with desk, computer, bookshelves and internet connection?

What is the admin support like?

Do they have printers and photocopiers to print hand outs for the students?

Finally, how is morale at this school? Do people like each other, generally speaking, at this place?

Thanks for any useful info you can provide on RMIT.

There should be some RMIT people here.

Any info you want to share?

Thanks.

People who have good jobs tend not to shout about them on forums Miyazaki! The fact that no-one's replied to you saying what a terrible place RMIT is probably means it's a good place to work.

I wasn't too impressed with the terms they offered me last year so turned them down but I reckon it's a perfect place for newcomers to HCMC.

Thanks.

Did you see the salary and contract terms in job posting at Dave's?

I believe the salary was US $2,800 a month. That sounds like a lot of money for Vietnam.

I don't remember the hours per week - 20 or more, perhaps.

Is this the same contract you were offered?

The fact that you steered clear of RMIT and claim that it's a perfect place to work says that it perhaps is not.

If you're a lecturer there you can earn $2500+, but rank & file EFL teachers earn $19 an hour. The standard contract is (or was last year) 20 hours (ie 5 half-days) a week, but what put me off was their insistence on you being available even if you don't have classes scheduled, which prevents you from working anywhere else - 20 hours max at $19 a week isn't a lot of money when you add it up. Also, there's a week's downtime every 10 weeks, so again you lose money.

My point Blateson was that for a newcomer it's an ideal place to work as you have a secure contract and a clean, professional working environment to help you settle in, but for anyone who knows the HCMC ropes, and who needs to earn a lot more than $380 a week, it's not so good!

Mr Bird is right. There is better work once you get established in HCMC. RMIT pay is up to about $20 an hour now, but starts are earlier, 7am, and there is Saturday work too. With the enforced week off every 10 weeks your average pay works out at $1500 a month. If you've got a master's degree in a business related subject you can earn loads more lecturing on their degree programs, but it's not the best work in town for TEFL teachers.

Yes, you have to be there full-time, for part-time earnings.

The location is in District 7 which I like, but it's a commute if you don't live in 7 or don't want to live there.

Thank you for the information.

Overall, the schools sounds good - Outstanding pay, modern facilities and classroom equipment.

However, how is management?

What is district 7 like - convenient area in which to live?

RMIT are advertising again this month.

Is there a lot of turn-over then here at this school?
Or are they expanding their faculty?

The money seems good, the equipment and campus facilites seem good.

What gives?

A well-established university such as the one being discussed can offer stability and the opportunity to settle down for a while without worrying about paying the rent. You might even get your own private 2 BR apartment and upgrade a bit. You might buy a motorbke. You get new shirts made at the tailor and get over to BKK once in a while. They pay on time and there are constantly more students and new positions opening up. People that earn more money in VN usually end up working harder though, so that is part of what you need to think about when you accept positions. If you were to go into investment banking, you would probably have to work some Sundays for the rewards.

Hey Miyazaki, one more thing - I note that we both joined at nearly the same time 2+ years ago. Nice one.
