I firmly believe that you should not wear any promiscuous clothing, anywhere outside of a western country. It is only "cool" to do that in a western country like america, italy, england, france, etc. When you go outside of a western country, like an hispanic country, or india, or syria, or senegal, and you do such a thing, not only are you insulting the decency and moral values of the local population, but you are drawing extreme attention to yourself and increasing the likelihood of unwanted attacks, be they verbal or physical.

(geographical note: while hispanic countries are in the western hemisphere, I am referring to modernized, secular, high-tech countries as "western"; therefore South Korea and Japan I consider "western" in terms of there secular, modern styles of dress. Mexico, IMO, has IN GENERAL a staunch Roman Catholic and conservative bent, and walking around dressed like Jennifer Lopez or Beyonce anywhere outside of a huge megalopolis like DF will probably not be too wise.)

An easier, more appropriate way to put that would be, "the Global North".

eclectic, have you arrived in Mexico yet?
like I said, skimpy clothes are in and have been for a while. Not insulting anything here it's what the locals wear, but much better to be comfortable then in style IMHO. Thanks to Hollywood, we gringas have to start off battling the idea that we are easy and willing to sleep with any man within two hours of meeting them. Once she's arrived, if the OP decides she'd be comfortable in clothing more on the skimpy side, she'll have no problem finding skimpy clothes to buy arround here!

I strongly suggest to foreigners, particularly women, not to wear really promiscuous clothing here regardless of what the locals wear. The prostitute look is only the younger generation, anyway. I think the OP was mostly concerned with climate (surprisingly mild for how far south we are - we're high desert so prepare for the occasional chilly day or night, heavy rain SOMETIMES, and hot weather. Not that humid but hot) and the school dress code, which I have since discussed with her (basically, smart/casual, with the required and assigned school polo shirt. No hose or pumps or suits or ties or anything like that). Mexico tends to be conservative, but casual. How's that?

Yes, correct Melee. I'm not sure where Eclectic's advice is coming from but it should be ignored on this subject, because much of it contains rather inaccurate off-the-wall deductions. Fashion in Mexico is what it is and has nothing to do with religion or moral standards.

Fashion aside, it all boils down to what the school specifies as appropriate clothing (and footwear). I was once told, at a private school, that I could not wear flat sandals to work. Sandals, if worn to work, had to be dressy with heels and practically all the teachers wore them because it is so hot here. The rest of the outfit was easy because it was a uniform.
