Hello fellow CR forum members! This is my first post, and as such I would like to thank everyone who has contributed. I have found all of your posts to be invaluable in preparing me for my move to CR in September.

Q: Do any of you insure your valuables (read: electronics)? If so, with whom? It's necessary that I bring some expensive things, and since camera/light meter are right on par with laptops in terms of cost, I would like to make sure I'm covered in the event my residence is broken in to or I'm mugged.

Also, an off-topic addendum:

Is 120 roll film available in San Jose? Specifically Fujichrome. I'm working under the assumption it won't be, but if anyone has information regarding film availability, or otherwise has any input, I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks for your time!

Thomas

*bump*

It's that much of a non-issue eh? Hmm.

I'm insured (health and property) through a Danish company (www.ihi.dk I think), which is relatively cheap and the experience I've had with them so far is very satisfactory. You might want something closer to home, though. Best insurance you can have is a) never carrying anything more than you have to and b) a big dog or a rabid woman to live with.

I've no idea what 120 roll film is, but I can't imagine it can be that hard to find here. It's a big city, after all. Is it difficult to find in the US? There are photography speciality stores here, that I know.

I will continue the insurance hunt accordingly. From what I have read so far the rates look pretty reasonable, especially when compared with US domestic insurance.

A dog might be an interesting option. I have a tendency to flee rabid women though, so I don't think that'd quite be my ticket. That sort seems prone to throwing things out of windows/at people if I'm not mistaken. Might be a bit of a liability. 'o_O;

For the record: 120 film is 6cm wide film that comes on spools. Outside the professional realm it (particularly as transparency film) has become a fairly esoteric item owing to the whole digital thing.

Thanks!

Now that my laptop has been stolen, I would definitely recommend getting some property insurance. Unfortunately, I have no idea about any insurance companies. And as always, be careful with all your stuff and with locking your door. Sometimes things look secure (like the two gates to our house), but they're really not (the locks were simply broken off). There are locksmiths that can make the locks more secure, too.
