There is broadband in Nizwa but not all areas have it and there's a waiting list. I haven't signed up for it. I just use dial-up at home.

There is and ADSL service in Salalah. It is only 384Kb and can be sloooooow sometimes. In the MOHE colleges all teachers have access to ADSL where the connection is 500KB, mind you when the students are online, that can be slow too. Here in Salalah they haven't upgraded the servers in te College since was opened several years ago!!
If you are working for the MoHE or any other Government body, you can ask for a letter confirming this and take it to the local Omantel office where you will be given a phone line for free. Without the letter it could cost you up to 200/- OMR deposit. (that is if you want international calls)
Any downloads on ADSl will cost 1/- OMR per Gigabyte up to a maximum of 39/- OMR after which it is free.

Thanks! Guess I better do all my downloads now but it is good to know that there is some form of internet connection...some is definitely better than none. And since yes, I will be with an MOHE college it is good to know we get free phone lines. |

That wasn't completely clear. Duffy may only have been referring to getting the phone line without the deposit. I would expect that you will still have to pay the monthly charges. Can you clear that up Duffy?
BTW zaylahis, many people just get the dial-up for home because the dsl often isn't much better... and save their major surfing for work. That is what I did, but I was in Muscat and my employer had a good connection.

Yes VS, you are correct. The letter only gives you international access. Bills still have to be paid. As it happens I download a lot of movies etc, so I usually pay the top end ADSL fee, but telephone charges are fair enough, calling UK is ok, not too bad as regards costs. This is Omantel we are talking about.
Oh yes, Skype, most people using version 2.00 onwards will find access by Omantel are blocked. There is a way around it, I am not going to put it on here, but any genuine (I can tell) forum users can PM me as to how it is done.
