Hello, I have some questions for anyone willing to help a relative newcomer. I have been living and working in a place called Haimen, Jiangsu for the last four months(don't bother looking for it on a map, you won't find it). It is absolutely tiny, and very little of note happens. I got offered a job at this college, which advertised itself as being in Foshan, Guangdong (but isn't). Does anyone know anything about it, location? size of the town? foreign teacher community?
I suppose that I'm just a little scared about being dropped off the map again, if anyone can alay these fears, then I would be very much obliged!! |

If it is Shunde you will be dropped off the map again!
Try to find out where in Shunde it is, eg. Daliang, Bejiao, Shencun, or if it is actually in Foshan. I think I have seen it but can't remember where. |

Lets me pitch in with some info on that illustrious urbs called "Shunde". We has been there uncounted times.
The town are actually called Daliang and Shunde is a county, now part of greater Foshan but still some 30 kms from Foshan Centre.
Daliang's population exceed not 300'000, in a compact urbanscape whose tallest buildings has around 25 floors.
The Polytechnic was set up a few years ago. I knows not of any ill repute either of it or its principals. In Daliang town thou mayst meet other foreigners around Zhong Square around which thou willst find a number of training centres and Daliang's shopping traps and highbrow eateries. It are a homey town, relatively wealthy (thanks to GALANZ, MIDEA, among other big businesses), clean and not overrun by migrants. Friendly too.
Geographically speaking, thou takest the train to Guangzhou, then a bus for one hour, and then thou willst find thourself within strolling distance from the Polytechnic or 2 kms from the downtown area.
Buses from Daliang gose to Zhuhai, Shenzhen and even to Honkers - the latter 2.5 hours away. |

If it is in Daliang there are some larger supermarkets with some western stuff, not as much as Foshan but it doesn't take long to get there. A nice walking street with some decent shops and DVD hawkers sometimes (best place to get electronics/movies though in the area is in Foshan).
Buses to Macau and Hong Kong take a couple hours, the other day I learned you can also get a ferry from Daliang to Hong Kong for under 200RMB.
Pollution in Daliang isn't as bad as Foshan.
Not to many homeless in Daliang, there is one guy who hangs out in front of a big hotel (can't remember name of the hotel) but he is very cheerful and can speak a lot of English.
The highschool kids I've met are super nice, very helpful with directions.
If the school is located in the city of Daliang it's an alright location, but if it's outside the city you always have to worry about when buses stop running for the night.
As for other foreigners, people say they're a lot in Shunde but I rarely see any, due to the fact that Shunde covers a large area.
I'm outside of Beijiao Town so if you need other info. about the area I will try to help. I've been here since Feb. so I don't know too much but will do my best. |
