I'll be starting at Sharjah Women's this summer. I was wondering whether there are any important materials to bring with me to the UAE or whether everything will be supplied by HCT. Also, are there any types of ESL teaching materials not allowed in the classrooms such as videos, novels, etc.? I'm not sure what to expect as far as the curriculum goes. Are teachers free to teach what they like or does approval need to be sought?

I would wager they have already chosen the textbooks, and a good idea of the curriculum they want taught.

as for video's/novels, again I think the program already has chosen stuff, and you may be able to modify it, but I don't think you get to just walk in and teach what you want when you want to.

English, especially at the Diploma level is very well organized and one could almost say regimented. You will be provided with set texts and reading materials, including abbreviated versions of novels, coursework and schedules that will be followed by all teachers at a given level.

Some teachers do use videos and other non-college provided materials. Be sure to check with more experienced colleagues about what will be acceptable in the classroom - especially videos and music. Some more conservative students or their families object to music and the subject matter of some types of films. There are not many students like this but it only takes one to complain and make your life that bit more difficult than it has to be. Just check it out before you show it your students to avoid any controversy.

At Higher Diploma level there may be slightly more room for creativity, but the courses have been delivered many times over the years and while supporting materials may change from time to time, the curriculum is pretty set in order to bring the majority of students up to the desired IELTS level.

If you've got some favorite resources, bring them along - they will probably be useful or at least a change for students and you'll have a certain "comfort" level working with materials that are familiar, tried and true.
