|
|
When I return overseas I am planning to specialize in teaching Medical English.
I notice several texts available on Amazon. Is there anybody else working in this subfield? If so, which texts do you like?
Thank you, |

Ah, ESP for med students. Or is it for doctors? Nurses?
It is necessary to know the profession or status, plus level of your students before giving any clear answer.
I have not found any truly good ones that I could swear by. My 2 co-workers have had more experience when dealing with nurses (not nursing students) here in Japan, but even they are not thrilled with what's out there.
What do you plan to teach the students?

Well, it pretty much depends upon who and what I find willing to engage me. If it comes to working with doctors that will be fine.
The U.S. has a critical nursing shortage, and I would like to see what I can do to help that. Certainly there would be enough financial draw to get them working hard.
I saw some texts specifically designed for nurses to pick up English. The way social security is working out, I can spend about 9 months out of every year and not have it affect the pension benefits. Then I can work here in California the rest of the year. |

The only text for teaching Medical English that I have used is English in Medicine, published by Cambridge University Press. The English used in the text and heard on the CD is British English. I found it useful for teaching a few doctors I once had as students. |

Thank you, John.
I am seeing a lot of English/whatever medical dictionaries. Was the book you used deeper than that?
This one looks pretty good too...

I have used a couple of different textbooks with my pharmacy class. One is Healthtalk and Gateway to medical English. Can't recall the publishers offhand, one I think is MacMillan. |

Yes, it covered the four skills, but put the student through a lot of typical doctor situations: doctor-patient consultations, doctor-doctor discussions, etc. |
