What surprises me more is that at my uni these people were actually paid, the usual 3500 yuan, no more experience than the next guy, they were all from an explicitly Christian organization, one of these teachers had an entire class walk out on him because he kept talking about religion, I accidentally walked in on an illegal bible-study/free English lesson that one of these guys had, yet nobody even told them off (as far as I know).

In my city I just heard of a mom of a very bright young girl looking for a Chinese English teacher for her daughter for this month. She was going from teacher to teacher trying to get a cheaper deal. She eventually got a friend of mine for 800 RMB for 20 two hour private classes. Most wanted a 1,000 RMB for the one on one classes. Parents don't have the money here were I teach.

The sad thing however is that this young girl was showing up my friend for knowledge by asking him English question on subjects he knew nothing about. My friend is trying to get out of teaching her. Poor kid!

In South Korea the Mormons are everywhere teaching English for nothing and they have to save and pay their own way for the whole trip. I think they are only going to get students who have no money for the most part.

I used to teach myself at a Church in South Korea on bible studies but I don't think it's right to be forcing your religion onto students in class. When someone wants to study the bible then okay but not for the sake of free classes. I teach classes now and again to kids for free but not to indoctrinate them on my own religious values. I taught two young Buddhist girls for three years in Korea and I never tried to convert them but they would ask me questions. It is not right to be undermining the teaching of parents in my opinion. When children have grown up then they can make their own decisions on religion and other stuff.
