I went to a night barbecue once at a Saudi friend's house and guess what? Yep, he had an outdoor AC unit. Mighty efficent it was, too.

Actually, most public buildings in Romania DO have AC. That's the thing that gets me: you walk into a building in Bucharest (where you always get hot summers), it's 40 outside, 45 inside with the air seeping wet, and everyone is sweating their Bowlax off rather than use the AC. Well, young people don't mind it so much, but there's always one dominant middle-aged woman with a beehive hairstyle, a throwback to 1982 (beehives caught on a bit later here) who insists that it be left off, because if it is turned on she will sudenly drop dead. People then give in to this BS.

The Bebsi office is kept at a comfortable 22, rest assured. Smile

That's in the sun, who on earth sits in the sun when it's this hot!? The temperature (shade) in Izmir was an uncomfortably humid 41c.

Shouldn't that read "Punkah Wallah"?

It has been horribly hot. We feel it more because it's early in the season and it's been humid to boot.

I was in Ayvalik, in my naturally air conditioned old Greek house where the temperature in the ground floor rooms never goes above 25c, when the scare stories started coming out about fearsome temperatures. I heard rumours of Wednesday being declared a holiday but it didn't happen. I returned to Izmir on Tuesday evening, to a horribly hot and un-air-conditioned apartment, in order to teach on Wednesday afternoon. Ericsson phoned on Wednesday morning to cancel the lessons this week on Wednesday and Friday! I was already stuck in said hot apartment!!
Never mind, thank God for an electric fan. It's not been as bad as I feared.

As long as you keep your beer in the freezer for 20 minutes before you drink it you'll be fine.

This heat isn't too different from the snow in the winter. Istanbul/turkey just isn't prepared for it. I'm sure Bebsi and Scot will agree with me that at the most disorganised place in the Gulf where we worked the only thing they did get right was the AC. Living in a 50 degree heat in the Gulf is so much easier than a pathetic high 30s degree heat in Istanbul.

Don't the Turks realize that heat + Westerns+ Turk with no Deodorant= pissed off TEFL teacher ready to KILL all in her path.

God bless KOC TAS who upon my prompt payment of 419 ytl installed one effective said AC unit into my Esentepe apartment.

Sitting and sleeping quite well thanks.

Until I go to work with 21 little Summer College Students in one said 45C
classroom for 6, yes count them, 6 hours a day. Sweat pouring off my face and down my back.. YUK!

Hear, hear, DMB.

In the Gulf 50 degs is easier than 36 in Romania, certainly. In the Gulf, wherever you go, they've got AC. OK, it's one of those loud noisy wall unit thingies that some Bangladeshi sticks in a window for installlation convenience and so blocks out the light, but at least you can be sure it's there.

In Romania, going to a public place, you DREAD that in all likelihood they will not have AC...or worse, that they will have it but some idiot who is paranoid about Legionnaire's Disease won't let them put it on, and you sit through a meeting/training session in a room where it's bordering 65 degs, and the sweat is gushing out of you.

Bebsi still keeps a hand in with the training, and in most of our clients' offices, they do indeed have AC. I try to ascertain this at the beginning when negotiating a contract. To be honest, if they don't, and I've a summer training programme, I stick a bit on the fee!!

It's Misery Money, basically.

So, Caterinamh, I know exactly where you are coming from.

Word of advice to all: when buying an AC unit, get an AA energy-rated unit...the extra money spent is very quickly made back by the savings on your electricity bill. And it's quieter too...our units just whisper their way through the sultry afternoons and cost hardly anything to run.

I remember reading somewhere that the ancient Romans preferred a Nubian bed partner in the hotter months as their skin wasn't hot to the touch ...

I am also in favour of having a Nubian or Abyssinian bed partner. Where can I get one ?

Do the A/C companies provide them ?

Today in the Agean expect the temperatures to rise at least another 6 degrees ,no wonder Izmir is pratically deserted . This could go on till the end of the week at least ,so far we have had 4 forest fires .
