Indonesia is reluctant, I am told, to give Kitas to teachers over 55 years, and as I'm approaching that mark (4 years from now) I want to 'get my foot in the door' in Indonesia teaching before I reach that age when it will, undoubtedly, be too late.
Yes - in Korea you can make good coin and save a bunch of money (I save about $1700 U.S. per month from my 2.7 million won salary), but if you do not enjoy the lifestyle in Korea, then you question whether it is worth the 'sacrifice.'
Koreans are nice, civilized people, but I find the whole culture and lifestyle here very passive and lame - there is no spice to the country, apart from the food.
I have not yet been to Indonesia, but when I see Indonesians they remind me, in many ways, of Filipinos, and the Philippines happens to be my favorite country in Asia. The Indonesians appear to possess a natural exuberance and 'joie de vivre' which is somewhat contagious. In Korea, on the other hand, I tend to see a lot of expressionless faces, from my students - it just tends to wear me down after a while. I usually feel like a robot when I teach here, because expressionless faces in the classoom does that to me.
