Do this. This is what I did a few years ago. Getting the Z visa is hassle free. Just take the paperwork to the visa office and you will get the visa in two days.

pay about HK$200 extra and get that visa in three hours. unless someone has a desire to stay in HK longer, paying more to get the visa faster makes sense since hotel and food expenses in HK for one or two days will cost more than paying for expedited visa service.

Went to the chinese embassy in London today, handed in the work permit, invitation letter, application form and passport. Ready to collect next wednesday.

Never asked for the physical examination form. Guess it was the people in Edinburgh bring tight po0 faces.

I live in the Philippines (american citizen) and last year the consulate here required a physical before they would approve a z-visa. Yes, I also had to get another physical when I got to my destination school. I'm just now applying for another ESL position in China and, it appears, many (but not all) of the schools are asking for a copy of my physical exam.
So, it's obvious there is no standard. Requirement of a physical (before getting a z-visa) varies with the school you're applying to and the consul where you'll apply for the visa.
Yeah, life's never fair.

It does change from country to country. "lower" countries (sorry, I don't know how else to put it) in the Chinese mind have more stringent requirements

This is probably the same for every country. But the school has nothing to do with it. The consulate does not care what the school says, which is why one should contact the consulate directly. 2001 I first came, brought the form physical that no American doctor could understand. Fudged a lot of it. Got to the consulate, they didn't want it. Never needed it since. Coming thru New York City, never needed

Coming from Cape Town, South Africa to Shanghai. We need to hand in the medical form with all the other papers before we get the Z-visa. Then we must have another physical examination once we get to China.

Seems the comment about "lower countries" is indeed correct...

I am just back to Wuhan from making a visa run to Hong Kong. Changed my F visa to a Z visa, and they DID ask for my medical certificate.
