So, boys and girls of the Big Bad TEFL World, I was curious as to where we all came from in the English speaking global community. I'm posting this poll because such good folk as Smooj seem to think, (albeit tongue in cheek) that there is a preponderance of Canadians on this forum. Cast your votes to prove this theory wrong, and show that this forum is truly a meeting of TEFLers of a multitude of nationalities; not merely a meeting place for the Canadian TEFL diaspora....!! I'm both British and Irish, well at least as passports go anyway.... |

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGH!
I'M A WORLD CITIZEN! I DON'T CARE WHERE I COME FROM! WHAT DIFFERENCE CAN IT POSSIBLY MAKE TO MY TEACHING ABILITY? TO WHO I AM? TO THE COMMON HUMANITY I SHARE WITH EVERYONE ELSE WHO LIVES ON THE PLANET I'VE SHOWN!?
Thank you for your attention.
Sigh.
Seriously, joe-joe's question is a valid one, and I've mentioned before that I'm Canadian by birth and education. But I haven't set foot in Canada in four years, and if my plans don't go awry, I'll end up EFL teaching for a living. As in career.
I've also left behind a lot of the "cultural aspects" of my "homeland." What I eat, what I do for a living, how I live, etc etc have been different for years, and I was just trying to make a point that I don't identify Canada is my exclusive homeland anymore. My community is a rural university campus in interior China. That's where I live, and I don't have any other home for the moment. I can tell that I haven't been accepted with open arms, but I am here to live and work. When I finish my job I don't commute to Nova Scotia. I stay here in this community. I shop here. I have friends here. And I never see my country of birth, ever.

Good point about being a World citizen; when filling in application forms, and I get to the bit about 'race/etnic'' origin, I always feel tempted to write 'human' instead of one using of the categories that are specified I noted you quoted from Bahai writings; are you a Bahai yourself? My Mother is, and I was 'born' one, but never took the faith up. I do however, like much of the fundamentals contained in its teachings. |

So far the UK/US are leading as one would expect but when you think of populations we have a higher percentage of our pop. represented probably due to the economy and lack of opportunities. I always wondered where the ozzies and kiwis were as I thought they tefled about a fair bit.
I must also say citizen of the world as I don't really relate to Canadians and the culture(or whatever you want to call it) anymore.
Maybe Canadians give more input here as it sometimes seems there are a lot of us here. Can't imagine why that would be though. |

I think it often seems like there are more Canadians around because Canadians are always mentioning that they are Canadian. I also worked with one guy, who, when ever a Canadian was mentioned he would point out to everyone that that person is Canadian.
ie
Me: God that Brian Adams song just won't go away, I've heard it like a million times this week.
Him: He's a CANADIAN! |

But if 25% of Canadians are EFL teachers, who is left behind to till the frozen clod, club the seals, mould the pucks, burn down the White House etc ... ???? |
