I apologize for bringing up this discussion yet again, but new info has come to light, and I'd like some backup (or rebuttal, if it's strictly necessary).
I've had two successful interviews with unis here in Istanbul this year, and I'm trying to get all my facts about work permission as straight as this country will allow them to be before I make any decision. Here's the deal...
I currently work in a private Uni, and I DON'T have a work permit. I've been told by everyone here that it's not a problem - for uni jobs, one only needs permission from YOK and an ikamet (which I have and bought myself). They assure me that a work permit is NOT NECESSARY to be completely legal for a Uni job. The fact that I have SSK seems to back that up. Furthermore, one of the uni's that has offered me a job (a fine, upstanding gov't institution, I might add) has said the same thing - YOK's approval is equivalent to a work permit for legal purposes, and all you need for that are a bunch of copies of your diplomas and about 18,000 photographs.
However, the other uni (another private jobby) has told me that the work permit is probably necessary, and that I might have to get it, although I could go back to the States and get it at Christmas. However, they don't know very much about it.
Anyone have any info about this? Experiences, stories, links, etc.? I'm trying to avoid returning to the States altogther, at least until the 7 1/2 percent sales tax on my dinners while I'm there stops getting melted down into bullets.
Thanks in advance! |

Coffeespoonman, I've never worked at a state uni so dont know the answer to your question. however, this morning I was looking at todayszaman and they have a legal corner where expats ask the expert lawyer their question. It might be an idea to send him an email.
