Is there anywhere else in China where schools have ceased to actually advertise jobs, apparently due to the massive glut of foreigners?

Whether applying directly using buxiban or abroadchina, or getting recruiters on the case, or just applying yourself via e-mail, it is starting to seem like a big hassle, with advertised jobs especially seeming a waste of valuable time (most being recruiting companies with bad reps or new private schools).

How have other people snared their jobs in this tough market before? I have two years experience here, a degree etc, so I am middle to low on the employability ladder, but I am also a pretty good teacher.

Experiences?

Chengdu is NOT an overly saturated job market for FTs.

Rather, it's actually one of the more vibrant job markets in China and wages in Chengdu have actually been on the increase.

abroadchina has become useless to a great extent at this late point-in-time. If you had wanted to make successful use of abroadchina, then it would have been necessary to have started the process months ago for next September.

As I said somewhere else here on this Board, there is a really great Aussie recruiter in Chengdu who is quite efficient...he advertises a lot in the China rubric of www.eslteachersboard.com.

Also, your degree and teaching experience notwithstanding, your ethnicity and country of origin may also have come into play.

All the best,

HFG

How does this posting help the OP's query? Can you tell me?

To the OP, if you want the name of the Aussie recruiter in Chengdu, just send me a PM. I am sure that he will be able to help you, provided you meet certain minimum credentials (university degree, etc., etc., scheduled country, background, etc.). He is rather choosey about who he helps, but his service is great.

All the best.

If I leave Beijing Chengdu would be my first choice to live/work.

I would go there in person and start knocking on doors and research various websites.

Tempting, the pay not the greatest and hours are typical but the location and scenery would be the selling points here.

What we love about Chengdu is that its close to a lot of Chinese culture. There are so many foreign expats that we have our own soccer, rugby, and cricket teams. I know the pay is only so so but the community is top notch. Any how good luck with whatever your looking for and if your interested just send us a shout.

agreed. chengdu is great, but job openings seem to be communicated through word of mouth rather than via the internet or some other central source.

www.chengdoo.com is trying to become that source; at the moment it's functional but still being built and does get some job postings and a lot of events postings if you're looking for that sort of thing.

the new chengdoo print magazine (www.myspace.com/chengdoo) will also eventually become this sort of resource.

i've just been browsing on the eslteachersboard or whatever it's called, and i have to say, most of these ads look totally shady. very few of them name specific schools, and many don't spell out specific terms of employment. as a job seeker, i find that extremely annoying.

there's one on there offering a salary of 3800 and airfare reimbursement of 1000. i wonder if they get any applicants.

though it's not as annoying as another lead i was following which advertised double the salary for 5/6ths the hours that they're actually offering.

A few scams exist, the typical ones are:

1. Bait and switch - good job offer replaced by a poor one at the last minute. Sometimes when you just arrived at the airport.

2. Pay and Pray- various fee paying schemes that you either lose the fee and get nothing or again end up with a less desirable position.

3. Reel and Deal- You are recruited offered good benefits but sold to a lower key institution that cannot deliver as promised (most common)

4. Dupe and Snoop- your records, transcripts, degree copies are copied and sold to thehighest bidders looking for a fake degree. Your name is erased out and theirs is placed into the templates. Job offers are fake usually with high salary to get as many applicant's records as possible.

5. Sneak and Cheat- your real salary is 6000 RMB a month but the school pays the recruiter, which pays you only , let's say 3000 a month and pockets the other 3000 for the whole contract year each month.

I'm sure there is more...

It has been great to see some kind of response on this thread. Thanks especially to HunanForeignGuy for proving (as he does everywhere else on the board) what a generous and kind chap he is.

I really begin to see what the elder statesmen here have been going on about now. Seems imperative that you get on the ground and start making the most of your chosen Chinese habitat, rather than jumping from place to place chasing internet-advertised pots of gold.

These Chinese fellas might be on to something with the whole Guanxi thing!

It would certainly be good to resurrect the thread in late September when everyone has relaxed into their positions and won't feel the need to cement their cards to their chest anymore.

Will see you there snoopbot - you definitely seem a wise man to know. Hotpot and free cigarettes sometime.... Very Happy ?

well, don't be so assured that being "on the ground" is a guarantee into the good jobs. i've been here two years and am pretty in the know about what's going on ... and i haven't heard anything to make my day. then again i haven't held a straight-up teaching position in over a year, so that could be affecting things ...

I'm an American and my wife is from Chengdu and I'm thinking about moving there because of family issues. What is the current job situation and what are the possibilities of earning 8000 to 10,000 rmb a month, thats what my wife thinks it will take to live comfortably. I do have a bachelors degree. Thanks for any constructive feedback.
