This story is from the Toronto Star, 14/7/07

3 Canadians arrested in Seoul over false papers
Three Canadians have been arrested in Seoul and accused of using false documents to get teaching jobs in South Korea.
Kwonyoung Jang, consul for South Korea in Vancouver, said a man from Winnipeg, one from Toronto and another from B.C. were arrested. The Winnipeg man is accused of paying $300 for a false University of Manitoba education degree in order to obtain a visa to teach in Seoul. Seven others were arrested in the police sweep.

Comment from JWB
Note that it says "arrested" -- not fired, not deported, but ARRESTED.

Just to be clear, I'M IN FAVOUR of any steps taken to week out those who are posing as qualified FTs by using fake diplomas and certificates. There are still a lot of them out there, it seems, and they're the ones who give others a bad name. Yet we still have people here (on Dave's) who will tell you where to go to get a fake degree.

As for giving private lessons being an arrestable offence in South Korea, I think that's more than a little extreme. At most that's breach of contract, a civil matter.

I am locking this thread.

We do not permit discussions of fake degrees/diplomas on this forum.

Regarding the teaching of private lessons in Korea and as a Moderator on the Korean Job Forum since its inception, I can assure you that teaching private lessons in Korea without the proper documentation and permission or outside of your visa category is a violation of Korean law and can present you with a lot of legal problems very quickly.
