You can retire in Japan, even if you're not married to a Japanese national.
I've heard of cases where long-term expats reach retirement age w/o having taken out permanent residence and are forced to return to countries they haven't lived in for years, because they no longer have a work sponsor or a Japanese spouse. |

gaijinalways: That's not accurate! With the US-Japan totalization agreement, which became effective in 10/05, it is only the work history credits that are used by either country's social security system, in order to establish eligibility for benefits. This was an important change since, in the Japanese social security system, you need 25 years of credits to qualify for an old-age pension, whereas in the US system you only need 10. In other words, no funds are exchanged between countries, only information. When you are ready to claim your old age pension, you actually need to submit separate applications to each of the two systems (although there is a provision where one country's system can forward the application to the other), and if eligible for both, you would receive separate checks from each system.
