Same thing happened to me in Xiamen several years back. Exactly the same MO, attacked from behind, beer bottles, 4 assailiants. The police were very helpful however could not find the perps.
Xiamen, Quanzhou, and Zhangzhou are know in Fujian as the "Golden Triangle" it would not be a srprize to me if these guys were the same group that preys on Foreigners in the Discos having a good time.
The different twist in my case was that after me buying the rounds of beers and the goodies that go with them they offered to "help" me home. Just before my own front door the attack occured.
Since I have always known Chinese people to go out of their way to be kind and generous I totally trusted them until I found myself waking up in the Hospital the next morning.
I does happen. People coming to China for the first time should be aware.
Awareness of your situation is key to survival.
Wouldn't you agree? |

The dating thing boils down to who you are dating. If you are seen to be dating a nice educated well dressed young lady then the knives come out, however if you are with say a good looking girl with a tattoo dressed as a lady of the night then I think you will experience no trouble. If you are with an older lady then no trouble again!
The other thing is I think we tend to treat things as racial rather than opportunism, meaning anyone at a bar or where ever that seems to have money and be an easy target, should be aware that they could get set up.
The following I got this week from a student. I had made my students write a short story on any subject. Anyone as can be seen can be a target for easy money. I wont correct the grammar for this post!
A Story of Myself, Lin Lan
Last summer holiday, I went to the bookstore in Bin Hai. I wanted to take a bus when I arrived at the bus station.
Suddenly, a little boy come here and said to me Oh sister, I lost my way and I lost my money. Could you help me. Although, I had a lot things to do, but I wanted to help the Pitiful boy. So first, I let the boy eat some food. Could you give me some money to go home and the address of yours that I can return the money to you After lunch, I gave him twenty yuan and let him went to the station.
About four oclock, I went home on the way, but I saw the boy again and he wasnt leave here so, I went to ask him, why dont you go home!
He didnt see me and said its none of your business!
I was angry and I found I was cheated. |

i've never seen any hostility towards myself in three years in china. either i'm a great guy and dont piss people off, or i live in a part of china where people dont hassle foreigners, or a combination of both. anyway, a recurring theme in these "i got beat up" postings seems to be popping up - bars, beer bottles, discos, women. i would expect there to be another side to every story that begins with "i was in a bar when..."
let me tell you, i used to manage a small hotel in phuket, patong beach. we regularly went down to bang la road and drank and played pool in the bars on that street. the most aggressive people there were other foreigners. never had any problems with the thais. maybe there are foreigners in china that are behaving in a similar way...? food for thought.
by the way, i dont go to bars regularly in china, but i've been to bars in each place i've lived or visited (sometimes with a chinese woman, sometimes without). no problems as i noted above and people usually offer to buy me drinks. |
