1. It is illegal
2. Many people do it
3. From 80 to 150 SR an hour

Openings in journalism are few. Freelancers will get published but rates are very low. Dailies are based in Jeddah not Riyadh.

Up to SR. 200/hour for AP or A Level.

Otherwise SR. 150 - 175 is normal, assuming of course, that you get clients from big families.

As Scot has said, taking private students is illegal if you are already in paid employment in KSA. That sai, however, many teachers moonlight by doing private lessons, with some busybodies making almost as much from private students as from their day job. Most employers turn a blind eye to it so long as it does not interfere with your work and does not constitute a conflict of interest. As always, be discreet.

I'm quite surprised to read that there are those who would accept 80SR an hour. Here in Riyadh, a qualified native-speaker teacher would expect at least 150 SR per hour, rising to 200SR - or, in one case I've heard of, 250SR - if you're teaching a member of one of the most prestigious families. Also be aware that Saudi students are notoriously unreliable and cancel at the drop of a hat, so negotiate some sort of system with your student, whereby they have to give you some minimum notice period, or else you bill them as though the lesson had taken place.

In one school I taught at the teachers who made all the money from privates were the worst teachers. The reason being that they taught it so badly in class that all their students needed the privates to catch up.

There are numerous language centres in Riyadh, all of which seem to have a problem getting staff. You'd be crazy to work for any of them full time but for moonlighting most people who have worked there seem to be satisfied with LSI. You have to negotiate a rate and they seem to go up to 110SAR an hour (but they will try to get you to work for a lot less). Not as much as you could get doing privates but it is steady and reliable, they pay on time and the work is cushy if you don't mind simply steaming through chapters of Headway
