Hi there,
I was thinking back to when I first arrived here; the rest of my co-workers didn't arrive until a week later. I could have used some company, or, at the very least, some directions to the nearest spot where I could have a beer or wine and meet some other foreigners in the neighbourhood.
What area are you in? Maybe someone here could direct you to a few hangouts. The weekend is here; best to be out and about rather than feeling blue in your room.
You'll start adjusting soon (especially when you'll have work to start dealing with).
Take care,

I`m in Saijo which is about half an hour from Hiroshima by train. I`m already so much better. I think that User N. Ame was right. It was just the initial shock. I haven`t spoken to anyone back home on the phone since the first night, but I have exchanged emails. I am no longer worried about the long distance relationship. I know that we are both in it for the long run and he is even going to come and stay out here with me for a few weeks in January.
I want to thank everyone again for the advice. I am totally in love with Japan. My apartment is next to some rice fields and they are totally beautiful especially in the morning when the cranes are out. I`m going out to eat tonight with some new friends! This was totally worth it and I`m glad that I decided to stay! |

midnightpariah, you are in Japan wonderland! Saijo, Hiroshima ken or Saijo, Ehimeken? Either way, there is so much to see and do there, either side of the Seito Inland Sea.
PM me if you want to correspond about things to see and do there.
I really recommend your man visit you in Japan. Hiroshima and Ehime are wonderful first tastes of Japan. You'll have lots to take pictures of and adventures to tell him about.
Good luck! |

| I am amazed at how people respond well to the "tough advice givers". Hmmm. You "tough guys" are going to make a believer out of me yet. |

Yes, Gordon - this is wholesome, constructive advice and well-intentioned.
Writing letters (even love letters) are a fantastic way to put one's thoughts on lemon-scented paper and draw cute little cartoons on the top right of the page.
If you post it first clas or second class this is not that important - include a CD, a copy of Private Eye or a voucher from a well-known book store.
Sound, reassuring, and make sure you send them stamps so they can reply. |

I am still surprised by the fact that after about a week in Korea, my first gig, I broke down and cried. Knees buckled on a staircase and I just broke down. If you knew me, you would be writing home to your folks, as in, mark it on the calender, xxxxx cried!
What I want you to know is that I have been outside the States since graduating in 94, and YOU, my Dear, are going to be alright. Leaving your boyfriend was partly you wanting to fly the coup. Then again you are, whether you realize it or not, testing him and testing YOU. Figure that out and you are home free for a while. |
