I don't think anyone disputes the fact that a bunt is part of baseball. The point that was being made is that the bunt is a bigger part of the Japanese game. |
Ya, it's a seemingly obvious and non-controversial point. I really suspect the source of the confusion is Gurdeep's lack of experience in Japan, because the point is as much a point about culture as it is about baseball. Again, a great read on the subject is Whiting's book, "You Gotta Have Wa" and his followup, "The Meaning of Ichiro". Sport is a cultural expression. The conservative, cautious, bunt, sacrafice and run game is a wonderful reflection of Japanese culture. People in Japan often say, when their team is slumping, that they've lost their wa.
The American game is a power game with emphasis on individual creativity and superstars. Not coincidentally, Americans are physically bigger and come from a libertarian cultural tradition.
No one is suggesting that the bunt is written into the Japanese race's genetic code! They were not born to bunt. They were nurtured to bunt! |
