Could someone please give me an idea for a starting salary (full-time) at a US university (NY) with either a BA or a MA in TESOL? Thanks

I've never heard of a BA in TESL/TEFL. Is there such a thing?

I don't know if there is a BA in TESOL, perhaps a BA with a certificate. My point is that I would like to get an idea of salaries. Thanks

I understood your point, but can't help you there. However, it's usually considered acceptable to go off on a tangent that is interesting in the circumstances.

In the case, the general view is that there are few full-time positions at North American universities in our field. The positions I'm aware of all require an MA + considerable experience at minimum.

I'll be interested to see whether anyone has feedback on this.

Again, for me at the moment, the point is not whether there are positions...I just need some salary indicators. Thanks.

Pardon my digression from your question. Will bow out.
I'm sure someone will have exactly the info you need right away. That's our responsibility, after all.

You can check out the Chronicle of Higher Education's salary survey at

BA in TESOL--$0 US (i.e., you will not be hired as faculty)
MA in TESOL--depends if you are hired as a full-time regular faculty or as a full-time instructor at a university language center. In New York, the former pay anywhere from $35,000 to $70,000 US (depending on the type and location of the university/college, among other factors). The latter typically pay less--$30,000 to $45,000 on average.

Surprisingly, at least in California and New York, community college positions often pay the best for entry level TESOL slots. However, with just the MA and no publications or teaching experience, you'll have a very difficult time finding full-time employment anywhere. Still, good luck!

The Chronicle's salary survey is indeed a great resource. Keep in mind, however, that the averages posted include all fields. E.g., entry-level positions in, say, economics or clinical psychology tend to pay a lot more than those in ESL. Accordingly, your starting salary in the latter field will probably be either at or less (sometimes much less) than the average posted.

Yeah, average salary in unis is low to upper $30s with no / limited experience. Possibly low to upper $40s for the "better-paying" jobs. Makes a decent second income if you're married.

Would a distance MA degree (that doesn't say 'distance' on the diploma) from an Australian university be acceptable for U.S. community colleges?

I have years of experience, and several of the last ones at a university in Korea. I also have an unrelated MA, but I'm looking to solidify this career back in the U.S. but following up with an additional MA in ESL.

Wondering if a distance program through Australia would be acceptable for this? I also know a U.S. one I might go through with instead though, even it were to be an issue.

I have embarked on a Ph.D. in a Southern state that shall remain nameless. A bundle of joy it is not- the environment is profoundly racist and educational obstacles are avoided with a shrug of inevitability- but it is a worthwhile endevor since in 2 years I will have put myself into an infinitely better position than with just an M.Ed. Most positions that require a Masters but no Docs are temporary and (relatively) low paying.
