It is EXTREMELY dangerous, as you would know if you read the presss reports.
If you are feeling suicidal, go ahead. There are loads of disaffected mujahedeen and Islamists just waiting for the chance to slit the throat of an innocent like you. |

99 times out of 100 I agree with Scot47, but I think it's unfair to call Basi "innocent." He's already living and working in an Islamic country, unlike many posters - you know, the clowns who say "Hey dudes, thought I'd like, put on my backpack and like, do the Middle East this summer." |

Dear grahamb,
Hmm, aren't you then - by implication - being more "insulting" than scot47 might have been when he used the term "innocent"? For, if Mr. basiltherat isn't guilty of innocence, then I suppose he'd be either a "troll" or _________ (fill in the blank).
Regards,
John |

clearly, this thread has deteriorated to name labelling/insinuations which to me serves no purpose at all. my intentions to get as much information as possible on the current situation on the ground there were genuine but i haven't got much in the way of information i was hoping for. Therefore i leave the time-wasting occupation of posting pointless replies to others.
thnx and goodbye

Dear John (never thought I'd open with those words!),
No, no insult intended towards Basil.
As for me being more insulting than Scot47... I'll take that as a compliment!
Yours aye,
Graham. |

I know the woman who ran the American Language Center in Algiers before it closed down (a while back).
She has not gone back as far as I know.
When I was in Morocco 4 years ago, I don`t recall hearing anything good about Algeria. I can ask my friend in Rabat about Algeria. It is something Moroccans do talk about. |

What a bunch of ignorants you are!! Algeria unsafe! What you hear about it is just exagerated info from journalists who have never been there. Is Madrid safe, and Morocco!!!! tell me about it.
Believe me, Algeria IS safe, I've lived there (never had my throat sliced) and do plan to return this summer. |

Algeria is perfectly safe and I would urge you to go there tomorrow.
That is my retaliation for your name calling.
By the way isn't there something odd about calling us "You ignorants" ?(sounds like a poor translation of -vous ignorants- which would be in idiomatic modern English - you stupid people -)
A touch of Francophonia ? Do I sniff a non-native speaker in our holy of holies ? |

All I can contribute about Algeria is that my father was a doctor there in the 1970's on a goodwill exchange program. He was in Algiers when he was invited to witness (I swear this is true) the first conjugal night between a bride and groom. White sheets were laid out to capture menstrual bleeding and thus confirm that the new bride was a virgin. Personally, i would rather dodge rivers of phlegm on the streets of China, but that's just me. |

A little uncertain how things work, are we?
That's ok, we were all there once. Ask your Mom, she will explain. |
