Hi all, I would really appreciate if someone could help me with this:

I will move from Miyazaki prefecture at the end of this month and will go to Gunma. I currently have a Miyazaki bank account and this will be useless in Gunma. Therefore, I have to transfer all my money to a new account. I am thinking of opening an account with Shinsei bank. How do I transfer all my money to the new account?

Cheers.

Go to an ATM, check your balance and then put that number in and withdraw.

Or go to the teller. Ask her how much money you have in the bank and then ask her if you can have it all.

I think trying to do an electronic transfer will just result in you losing some cash due to handling fees.

1. Open Shinsei account
2. Furikomi transfer all your money into that account
3. Close the Miyazaki account

Done.

I wouldn't advise closing the Miyazaki account as the Japanese banks charge a fee for doing this.

As i will move to Gunma, wouldn't that be a problem to close the account, as I would have to be physically present to sign some documents in Miyazaki?

That's all well and good, but what happens when you have over 1 million yen in your account? No way would I want to be carrying around that sort of cash. Shocked

You might be better off going with one of the larger banks like Mizuho or SMBC ( I assume they have branches in both Miyazaki and Gunma ) ... You could open the new account there and just furikomi the money into the new account.

You should be able to set up the Miyazaki account to close on a specified date, say 2 weeks after you're expected to arrive in Gunma. That should give you plenty of time to do the transfer before the account closes.

Unfortunately, there is no shinsei account near where I live in Miyazaki. My supervisor suggested I open an account with the local post office, then, once I move to Gunma, I access it again, then transfer it to the new bank, whether it be Shinsei or e-bank, or whatever. Good idea?
