How many Expat Teacher do you think their are in CR? 100? 75? not including volunteers and backpackers...the real deal like John Hall or even Ole even though his more like a gap year...but at least he got trained and takes his profession serious.

How big is the TESL community in CR?

Thanks

Very Happy

Whatever the number is, it is not enough. That's for sure.

I would say that it is difficult to count the number of serious teachers because the number is constantly in flux: these teachers are almost always coming or going.

Perhaps one way to calculate the number might be to take a look at my list of schools on another thread and attempt to make a guess from that.

It depends a lot on the type of school. Some schools are much more serious than others, and so the serious schools attract a lot more of the serious teachers.

Even Ole? The hell! What blasphemy. I'm not "in my gap year", I'm here because it pleases me to be.

On a slightly more serious note, even if I do not planning on staying in CR for longer than this year I do count myself as one of the more serious teachers. I'm certainly no run-of-the-mill random backpacker teacher.

The TEFL community, as John Hall points out, is difficult to ascertain properly. I'd guess, in terms of serious, long-term ESL teachers, that the number is (probably well) under 500, but anything more accurate is hard. There's a shitload of people here that does this teach-and-move kind of thing, so .... the school I work at is serious enough but pays shit so it scares away the more serious teachers, which is too bad.

The universities, I'm guessing, are the high castles of serious teachers (such as John Hall).

Brotha no offense

I just meant this isn't a career for you. I know you take teaching seriously by the fact you took a TEFL course and how envolved you are in the local forum. I will miss you when you move back to Norway. Or will you be keeping an eye on CR forum?

Yeah I have been on the newbie forum and realize an MA in TESOL is what opens your doors to a better lifestyle of teaching at a University level. My cousin has a MA in TESOL from Fresno State and taught part time for 5 years waiting for the full timers to retire...then he gave up and became a Prison Guard? go figure. While he was teaching part time at the local community college, he was making subsistance living even for Fresno, CA. I think an MA may be the way to go for me. Excuse my pun.

I am getting ahead of my self. Thanks for your take Ole.

*wipes foam off mouth with shoulder*

I'm sorry, Dave, but I couldn't hear you properly. Would you please step closer and repeat it?

*shifts grip on baseball bat behind back*

Yes, that's it... a little bit closer ...

:)
