A friend told me that his mate was making 40 k a year there as an EFL lecturer.......is that really what a college in the west of Scotland pays. If that is the case then I will be going there....that is equvilliant to working at a good middle east college!! |

That 40k salary will be liable to UK income tax and National Insurance payments. For that amount of money the college will be looking to employ someone who is highly qualified and experienced (and can spell 'equivalent' correctly). I doubt they will provide free accommodation. And of course the successful candidate will not knock off at 1.30 pm. |

It's certainly possible if it's HE. He would have to be on at least Grade 8 (Senior Lecturer) and at the top of the grade (Point 44). This will rise to a minimum of 44,000 by the end of next year.
The bad news is that the private providers are now taking over HE EFL provision at a gathering speed and re-deploying people on reduced salaries. I think this has been made easier since the new reforms have come in, whereby every few years the individual's role is compared to set criteria for the grade they are on. If they don't meet a sufficient number of the criteria then down they go to the grade below. The criteria for an 8 would certainly require some line management, research/publication or leadership of a credit bearing module. While the HE establishment might have encouraged this, the private firm will have no reason to so. |

Teaching staff are now facing the same treatment that cleaners and school dinner ladies got years ago. The work is being farmed out to private companies. Lowest bid wins. Styaff are re-hired on lower wages.
Not many on 40,000 pounds ayear, believe me. Given the choice between Greenock and the Gulf I know where I prefer ! |

Andy, BAE are recruiting for the KSA. Salary 38,000 + bonus. Better in your pocket than Gordy's. |

Grahamb,
Lived in dubai for 8 years...wouldn't touch Saudi. I know they don't compare socially, but I have been to Jubail in the north of Saudi and couldn't do it. The country is the largest open air prison in the world.

I fear that the recent legislation introduced by the Scottish Parliament regarding the repayment of fees will cause lecturer pay to be surpressed further. Thankfully, I'm up for retirement while the pension is still worth something. |

Your descrition of the country is very apt!!If it wasn't for the oil, they would still be desert Bedouins fighting tribal wars against each other etc!Instead they have a nasty dictatorship which still publicly executes people by beheading for a wide range of offences.By the way,I also heard that anyone unlucky enough to be in the area is forced to watch??? |

To Andymac and any others............
I don't know where you got the figure of 40,000 from! I was employed by JWC to be Director of Studies for China - 48 hours before leaving for China, with my ticket in hand, the Chinese pulled out of the deal and I was stuck in Greenock.
I later went out to China to sort it all out - there weren't even buildings. A complete scam! I ended up taking legal action and won.
If you read the Greenock Telegraph on-line you will see how the Principal was fired (he had already ruined the college in York before JWC!) in late 2006.
There were virtually no overseas students, only some au-pair girls in evening classes. There were 3 full-time senior lecturers in EFL, maximum, 33,000 before tax, but waiting for the axe.
Don't touch the place with a barge pole! Greenock and Port Glasgow (where "Sweet Sixteen" was filmed) has the highest number of registered heroin users in Europe. The Middle East is infinitely preferable. |

Greenock is very close to Airdrie in my list of 'Places Not To Be In'. (Others are Govan, Paisley, Lagos and Walthamstow.)
Why do you think so many of us Scots couldn't wait to get out of that benighted land ? |
