As the Summer break is coming up (or those who are already started *beep*!) what are your plans?

Personally what with the little city tax surprise, a family wedding trip home last month, and baby on the way.. the bank balance is looking a bit poorly. So for us it looks like a short trip to the Gujo Hachiman Odori (did it last year and it still affects me today, I haven't had such a moving cultural experience for a long, long time) and a few daytrips around Mie.

Have a good and safe one!

Like you, markle, I'll be looking to keep my spending to a minimum this summer, so I plan on taking a deeper look at Tokyo and some of the surrounding areas. From what I've heard and read, there's a bunch of interesting things to see and do here that I haven't gotten around to.

My red pen is on a roll, marks will be submitted in exactly... 55 minutes. And then... studying in England for 4 weeks, and finally 2 weeks of relaxation in Spain. Out of here tomorrow! Flying back home (ie; Japan) on ... September 11th Shocked Any others flying on this inauspicious day? Are there any who would not? The secretaries in my office (Japanese) said "Absolutely not". What do you think?

Happy summer everyone,

My folks are coming to Japan to pay me a visit and the check out the place.

I plan to take them down the line to Kyoto. I wonder what is the best way of doing this? Shinkansen? We have maybe 7 days. Do you have to buy Shinkansen tickets in advance?

kiwi
get your parents to get a JR rail pass, unlimited use over the time period you buy, available only to tourists though.
Generally no need to reserve unless it's a peak time like the end or start of a holiday period, or weekend. Also in Kyoto you can get a two day (?) subway/city bus pass at the tourist info place outside Kyoto station.
