There are no permanent foreign native speakers teaching EFL/ESL, because those skills are simply not needed in the Philippines. They already have thousands of people who can do the job better than you or me.

The reason for there being no permanent foreign native speakers is this.

1. Getting an official work permit in the Philippines is a time consuming and very expensive affair. The kind of work we do (teaching English in a nation which already uses English as the official language of the Government and Education) does not permit or justify going through those hardships. And once again - and this is important - Philippines Dept. of Education does not grant work permits to ESL/EFL specialists because they have enough qualified individuals in the Philippines who can do the job better than you or me.

You should really be more circumspect before giving advice and false hope to potential teachers in the Philippines.

You are presenting an inaccurate picture of the situation in the Philippines.

One final thing - for the very rare/lucky individual who might land a job in a Korean run EFL school in the Philippines - he/she would have to work on a 60 day tourist visa - with limited entries to the Philippines. In addition, too many entries in a single year would raise questions about the true activity in the Philippines - and the Philippines Ministry of labor does not take kindly to foreigners stealing jobs from native Pinoys/Pinays - as the case should be.

The Philippines will continue to grow (slowly) as an EFL market for foreigners (especially Koreans) but they will use Filipino natives.

If you want to work in a country with a similar economy, you should target Indonesia. Don't waste people's time giving false hope about an EFL market which cannot, and will never be broken into by people like the ones who inhabit this forum.

And this is still wrong.

English teachers who want to investigate opportunities in the Philippines should be encouraged to check the job scene for themselves.

There are several professional groups for English teachers in the Philippines. One can attend their meetings and see who teaches English. One such group (the English Teachers' Club) is sponsored by the British Council in Pasig City.

What job scene? There is no job scene! The only scene is a local one, in which Filipinos are employed giving lessons to foreigners from Korea and Japan who come to the Philippines for affordable English classes.

If you came to the Philippines to work as an English teacher, you would be in an illegal situation and liable to deportation for life from the Philippines for breaking their strict Immigration Laws. Just read what it says on the Tourist 60 day Visa (which might get shorter soon) when you enter the country. Warnings are strict, and those breaking the law face criminal charges. The Philippine Judicial system is based on the U.S. model, where infractions are taken very seriously. You cannot 'pay' yourself out of a situation in which you break the law.

1. It would be illegal, and the Philippines does not give 'work permits' to TEFL specialists because they have their own -much more qualified and savvy than you, I may add.

2. In the event that you wanted to start a business in the Philippines, you would need a substantial sum of money, and many 'backhanders' to local officials to set up your business - whether language school or other. People like you and me do not have that kind of money or business acumen. We would not be posting here if we did. This is only for business investors, who can pump around $100,000 into the economy. EFL 'teachers' need not apply.

It is disgraceful that people like you give false hopes to people about EFL opportunities in the Philippines, when, in fact, there are basically no opportunities. MOD EDIT

I challenge anyone actually working in the Philippines to enlighten us about the "dynamic job scene" for EFL teachers that a certain misguided poster posts about. Shameful nonsense.

Nobody (and, I repeat, NOBODY) has said that there is a "dynamic" job market in the Philippines for foreign native English speakers. Please tell us who said that.

What people have said is that there are definitely jobs in the Philippines for foreign native English speakers. Those positions are indeed legal! If you don't know about those jobs, it is not our fault.

It is you who have said on this thread that there are NO jobs. This misinformation and outright exaggeration is the real nonsense. You can talk all you want about the sort of available jobs that you would not want for yourself (or the demographic of the student population), but that does not mean that others wouldn't jump at the chance to take them.

I repeat: Those who are interested in teaching English in the Philippines should simply go there and find out as much as they can on the ground. Simple Internet searching turns up offers, such as the following recent listing of a full-time job for a native English speaker who is American, Canadian, British, or Australian

Cebu City, Philippines - English job offered

MOD EDIT
Date 11 July 2007

NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS

(FULL-TIME)
Between 27 and 40 years old
Must be an American, Australian, Canadian or British citizen
Preferably a holder of a Philippine resident visa and presently staying in Cebu City
Preferably with a bachelors degree or a CELTA/TEFL/TESL certificate
ESL teaching experience is an advantage
Must be energetic, outgoing and creative
Must be a good organizer and a positive team leader
 Must possess good interpersonal skills

And if you don't currently hold a resident visa, it's still listed only as "preferably" --which means, for the reading-challenged, that it's a preference. If you're in the Manila area, you can find many similar offers.

There are also schools in the Manila area with ONLY American or Canadian native-speaker English teachers. I think they're legal also. Laughing

Good luck trying to get a Philippine Resident visa. For unskilled ESL/EFL teachers (and that is what we are in the eyes of the Dept. of Labor/Philippines, because ESL/EFL is not recognized as an 'import skill').

The job offer from Cebu is a one off, and the school would be very unlikely to offer the job to an EFL Daves' backpacking type. They can get plenty of Filipinos to do the job.

There are a few International schools in the Philippines - around 10 in total, and they hire certified teachers, during recruitment drives overseas. Most of the forum people here would not be qualified for those posts, and even if they were, competition would be intense.

It is wrong to portray the Philippines as a viable teaching destination for EFL/ESL teachers, because that is so far from the truth.

Giving hope to people about a situation in which there is little or no hope is not good.
