This is a few decades out of date- in my first year of teaching in America-
current events quiz- the leaders of Israel and China were:
Gold in My Ear and Mouse E. Tongue. Not making this up (just cleaned up the spelling of "tongue"). |

From Wikipedia-
Golda Meir (Hebrew: גולדה מאיר, born Golda Mabovitz on 3 May 1898, died December 8, 1978, also known as Golda Myerson from 1917-1956), was one of the founders of the State of Israel.
Meir served as the Minister of Labour, Foreign Minister, and then as the fourth Prime Minister of Israel from March 17, 1969, to June 3, 1974. As the BBC put it, Golda Meir was the "Iron Lady" of Israeli politics years before the epithet was coined for Margaret Thatcher.[1] David Ben-Gurion once described her as "the only man in the Cabinet." She was the first (and, to date, only) female Prime Minister of Israel, and was the third female Prime Minister in the world.[2] |

Three of the examples cited are easily explained. Students preparing for an oral English test memorize the answers to the questions in the order they appear in the book. So if you ask the questions out of order, or ask a question that isn't in the book, they don't listen to the question, but give you the answer that's next in line. You can almost hear them thinking: "Let's see...this is question number 5 so the answer is..."
I don't think it's funny...just STUPID.
I like the one about Gold In My Ear and Mouse E. Tongue though. |

In a history exam:
Q:Name a battle in world war 1....
A: World War 2
Q:What did the Treaty of Versailles say?
A: We should kill more Germans.
My fave though was in an exam back home in the UK. In a multi-part question that asked about the pasteurisation of milk, the growth of microbes at certain temps etc, the final part was:
Given your answers in parts a-d, where is the best place to keep milk fresh?
A: In the cow!!
And the kid got top marks.... |

1)What do you call someone who used to be your boyriend, but isn't any more?
Answer: Extra-boyfriend (I thought this a quite pragmatic answer)
2) On a different quiz I was trying to elicit the word "bizarre" (an easy word to mispell). The answer as written: "bigarse".
I almost thought the student was having a joke, but she was quite a sweet and innocent young lady who had no idea what she had written. Made my day.
3) Not on an exam, but when discussing the word 'stranger' in class I was trying to elicit the adjectival form and one student gave me 'strangerous'. It may not be a real word but it certainly ought to be. Rolls off the tongue. |
