Ok I am considering my next move within china and uncertain where it should be.
I have live and worked in Shenzhen and Quanzhou. Both have their high and low points but I don't think I want to live in either again or anymore.
My Pretty Chinese Girlfriend is not a factor to tell you the truth so I will not take her living in Quanzhou as a factor for my decision.
So here is what I want out of china... A place to live and work that is not too hot and no too cold. I like to go outside and I really hate 100 % humidity and 95 f degree temperatures. And I hate freezing weather as well.
I like to be near the big city because I do like to shop at decent stores like Metro and careffour and Wal Mart but I don't think I want to live within the big city anymore.
I like to travel and adventure when not working and like the outdoors.
Of course I need the opportunity to make at least 8000 a month whether it be in primary salary or the combination of primary and side work. And of course I want to work in a decent setting with some structure but with people I can trust and work with well.
What do you recommend as far as cities and / or companies / schools to look into? |

To be honest I don't think China can accommodate your requests.
I was going to say Kunming for the weather, but the salary would be too low. I would recommend Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Ningbo or Wenzhou. Yes the weather around these cities is hot, the humidity is a killer, but is there such a place with perfect weather. All these cities are relatively developed with plenty of opportunities to easily make 8000RMB. Besides Shanghai the other cities are not too big. Lastly you will have access to the stores you wanted.
I am just wondering if that Pretty Chinese Girlfriend is so pretty, why wouldn't you want to go back there? |

Dear Jeff.
Hello New York dude...
These are my thoughts for you..
First Quangzhou...well, I actually feel like I know you personally know because two teachers from your former school have come to work with me where I am now.
Next...try Dalian, Qingdao, Yantai..It doesn't get any better than that. Do you have a university degree? If you do, then RMB 8000 per month is easily attainable in Dalian, Qingdao..in Yantai the salaries are a bit lower. It gets a bit blustery in the winter in all three cities, but the four seasons in each city are very clear and distinguishable and the change in season is really nice. All three have a good amount of Western amenities available and each of the three is just a pleasant place to live, provided you are working in the boonies. I might have a job lead in each of these three cities for you provided you can pass a medical examination, can secure a least one viable letter of reference, etc.
Quangzhou is the end of the world, IMHO, and I just don't find SZ appealling to me personally -- many foreigners like it and many don't.
You might also think of Kunming -- it's a great city, very verdant, the climate is rather mild and the presence of so many "minorities" makes it charming. I would have a decent job lead in Kunming for you.
Those are my choices. As for me, well, I am a Manhattan-kid so I just need a big city but then again maybe you are from upstate or from the Island.
All the best,
HFG |

Suzhou would seem to be ideal, although there are a lot of mosquitoes in the summer.
Xiamen? Guilin? |
