Why does that matter?
As VS said, nearly every expat here, whether in teaching or not, is here for monetary reasons (not necessarily gross salary, but net savings, as there is nothing to spend on, and living expenses are among the cheapest in the world). And yes, a lot are also here for religious reasons.
And that's about it. No one comes here for the culture/food/sites/etc. |

She is not a girl, she is a woman and retired from ESL, and she is not like any woman. And my associate Dmb said once that "her bark is bigger than her bite". |

I have friends who have been caught in this trap for years here in the US and it is getting worse not better. One person with an MA and 5 years overseas was just offered in the low $20s - at a state university. And they acted like they were really giving her a great offer... since she wouldn't have to be driving between 3 jobs as she had been doing... with no benefits.
Every once in awhile one sees an ad offering in the $30-40,000 range, but not everyone can re-locate to another state for various reasons... and most of those jobs are filled before the ad actually runs anyway... but the rules often requires that job openings be advertised.
This is not a viable profession in the US unless you do it in the public schools with an education degree and cert. Most people end up leaving the field... often to plum jobs like telemarketing if they can't afford to go back to school to get a degree in something else.
But we digress from the topic of Saudi...

You are so very correct about the US job market for ESL teachers. Every once in a while a school will put an advert on Dave's -- and I answered it! However, I was pointedly told that 'only local teachers could apply' period!

The TESL market in the U.S. for holders of M.A. degrees is quite good in the community colleges (not the state universities or private language schools).
This has been hashed out many times on these forums, with disbelievers not wanting to admit that community college ESL instructors can make much over 30K. In truth, however, I regularly see offers for such jobs for well over 50K -- with the upper range reaching into the 80Ks. It of course depends on where you are and what your availability is. |

I nearly fell off my chair when I read this ....but joking aside, I have always been told by my female students here that Morocco and Oman are the places to go where they get 'love potions' or have 'spells done' and all that other hocus pocus stuff- I find it unbelievable in this day and age that people believe in this rubbish! anyone else came across this? |

Haha... that reminds me.
Arab News (KSA English daily) usually reports something along those lines happening in KSA!!!
It is usually Nigerians, Bangladeshis, Indians, Pakistanis, Somalis, Yemenis, etc (even Saudis!) who are doing these things. They advertise their services and stupid women fall for them. Their services usually advertise that their spells can prevent a husband from marrying again, bring a cold husband close to his wife, etc.
They charge a pretty penny, usually on the order of 2-5,000! And they get quite rich, as one can imagine. Whenever the police or mutawwas comes to know of these people, they send a policewoman over to them and then arrange a trap. Once the sorcerer asks for money, 3 gazillion police officers descend upon the apartment room from nowhere and arrest the sorcerer.
Everytime I read these stories, I laugh at the stupidity of some people. |

Everytime poeple want to fool and make a money out of soemone ,the taget audiance must be women.
Forget about "love potions"" and how to keep yr husband on a leash" stuff.
Here in Japan, one american that goes with a name "Billy Blanks" who has been in US military.
he s been making millions by selling exercise dvds "Billy`s Bootcamps".
150$ 4 DVDs. and each has 50 minutes work out.Everyhousehold in Japan has a set, and he is the topic of classroom discussion from Elementary school kids (their parents bought it) to adults. Billy says "you will see changes in 7 days or money back gurantee"..
I dont think exercise can change any body`s physical forms in 7 days.
One must combine it with healthy food, life style changes, reduce stress, and free from financial and other worries.
The point: Most people want to live with hope ( that something good/better will happen to my life soon) and some people take advantage of it.
If someone doesn`t live with hope, meaning NO LIFE.
Ant this is not a laughing matter.
The best is to educate these naive people. Arresting the baddiess will not always solve problems. And why muslims do not let their women /girls communicate with others... Now we know.. |

What a joke... and if this is true, why are you overseas and not here? Less than 1% of ESL teachers earn anything like $50,000 and those that do live in astronomically expensive urban areas where that salary will only barely pay the rent. Yes, I've seen those Community College jobs and even got offers, but not one of them offered contracts and benefits except to 2 or 3 teachers of the 50-70 ESL teachers they had on staff in each of the 6 or 7 branches. To get one of those jobs required years of past slavery there and plenty of wasta with management. (sound familiar?) Not one of them would guarantee hours and none of them offered anything even close to full time. I know too many people who are stuck in the Community College grind... working at 3 or 4 locations to try to make a living. Being an office temp was a better choice financially...
But, come on back... as long as you've been overseas for 10-20 years saving lots of money, you might be able to pay your most basic expenses on the average ESL salary. Just remember that your health insurance will be $250-1000 a month depending on whether you are single or married... and without it, an accident or illness can go through all that savings you socked away in a month or two.
A few of those amulets and charms might help you survive in ESL in the US.

Quite the exception. The local CC where I used to work now has 10 full-timers with contracts. The other branches in the same CC district have a bit more than that. |

I can make as much from my investment income and it's a good thing since I live in a town with almost no ESL and one small uni that could only offer Freshman comp... with only the vaguest possibility of a contract. Read enough bad essays in my life... no thanks. There is some very limited part time hourly stuff at the military base nearby. Generally speaking it would be tough to even pay the rent, and this is a low rent area.
Wow... all they way up to 10... happy days are here again...

Who are the 'others'?
Susan, do you want the Muslims to let their women/girls to communicate with others before marriage? And you want to see the Muslim girls get pregnant at the age of 12 and 13, as is happening in the American and British societies? Is this what you want for your counterpart the girls in Japan, or is already happening there?

Really? Wasta in the land of Uncle Sam?
I thought Wasta exists only in the Gulf and third/fourth world?? |
