Hey all!

I'm about to embark on looking for work in the UAE but I have some questions. This is the first time I'm going overseas with children so I have a lot of questions about their care. Where do the school aged children go? Are there private schools taught in English with a North American curriculum? And who teaches at these schools? Also, what about children who are not school aged? When your contract says you'll be alloted tuition for your kids, does that include some kind of payment for care of a non-school aged child? And last but not least, is the tution clause in your contract enough to cover what tuition actually is?

Thanks all!

smedini - various amounts are paid as tuition fees. there're plenty of good schools and again a variety. you want a good school you're looking at about 30,000Dhs per annum - let that be your guide when it comes to accepting how much you'll need.

It all depends on where you are living and who you are working for.

WE had offers in abu dhabi, dubai, and the RAK. When we factored in our kids education (3 of them) in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai we would be paying money out of pocket for the schools we wanted. In the RAK the allowance coveres all of the tutition for the our kids. IN fact the difference between what we would pay out of pocket and having the kids education paid for was about 5 to 8 thousand dollars.

So it depends on where you are going, and who you are working for.

Thanks guys!

Zoot...does that mean 30,000 per annum per child? And 'billy, did you find out about schools before you arrived in the Emirates, or did you wait and do the research after your arrival? If you did it beforehand, how did you find out about them? Did your employer help you with a list of schools, for example?

Thanks again Smile

Hey dini

Look in wikipedia. Look up your emirate and the school you will be teaching at.

You can find lots of schools listed through wikipedia, and then look at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Schools_in_the_United_Arab_Emirates

there are lots of the schools listed here.

also do a google search for your emirate and elementary schools. You can find lots of stuff there.

It depends on which emirate you are going to. Some of the schools in dubai and abu dhabi will run more than the 30,000 durhams per year and some are less. We have 3 kids, so we get the maximum of 80,000 which means about 26,000 per year per kid, and so we would have to pay out of pocket in abu dhabi and dubai for the best schools.

Thanks 'billy!

Also, have you ever heard of any schools paying for day care in lieu of tuition for those younguns who are not yet school aged? We have two kids, one six and the other one and a half...day care will be the option there, I'm sure.

Thanks again!

My employer (HCT) will only pay school fees as of the year in which the child turns 5.

I don't know about other employers.

UAEU only pays for education once the child has turned 5.

I have never heard of an education type employer paying for day-care for young children. But nor do many employers in our home countries cover such costs. At home most of us would be sending our children to free, state schools - so getting the fees more or less covered when we come here covers the cost of something we would not normally choose to pay for.
