I normally used Indian or Pakistani male tailors over the years. The trick is to get someone recommended by the other teachers so you find one that won't do something silly. Rolling Eyes

I had a great set of tailors in Naif in Dubai. It's a bit daunting, but there was a paid parking garage almost directly opposite the police station. There were loads of tailors and textile shops back there. Satwa in Dubai is also known for it's textiles and tailors...lots of shops to choose from and easier on street parking. In Sharjah, behind the Sharjah cinema, there are a slew of shops and tailors, as well. Great prices on all sorts of fabric...my friend had her brides maid dresses, groomsman shirts and 'waistcoats' all made in Naif, Dubai. Fabric can be dead cheap (3 dirhams/yard) to very pricey for some European stuff. I think I worked out the actual cost of materials and labour for a blouse-around $25 USD. Cheaper than the ready made and made to fit perfectly, like VS said.

Great stuff, everyone! Thanks to VS and everyone else for your helpful information!!!!

Are skirts that go mid-calf acceptable? And, as time is short for me now to do much shopping (even online as shipping times need to be taken into account), is there much variety in Al Ain in terms of skirts and shirts? Or should I really make more of an effort to purchase as much as I can in the States before leaving?

Thanks in advance! Very Happy

Sure, mid-calf is fine. If you have a couple weeks, that is plenty of time to get delivery from most websites... and you can pay a little more and get express delivery too.

You may find a limited choice in Al-Ain - depending on your taste...

Thanks once again, VS. I have purchased a good number of mid-calf length skirts recently, which have been easy to find here in the US...I have had trouble finding anything longer that wasn't a prom dress though, so was a little panicky! I had a look at the site you suggested and may order a couple more skirts, they look ideal for the UAE. Thanks!

I am grateful that there are tailors there. I have had some pretty good experiences with tailors in Asia (Thailand mainly) who do a decent job at copying clothes.

On a side note, thank you to everyone on this board (a special thanks goes to VS, whose input is especially informative and helpful!!!! Cool ). I have been following the UAE forums for years with the intention of eventually working in the UAE. Now it is finally happening and thanks to all of you, I feel much more prepared. Thanks again!
