I want to sit the 2007 Proficiency test and I see a requirement for the lowest level is 100 kanji.
For anyone who's sat the test, what kanji is generally required? Kanji for transport? Days? Numbers? I heard that colours is something you should know. |

Are you in Japan? If so, just go down your nearest decent bookshop and you'll find that there are books which tell you which kanji are required for each level. I remember a I used a book called something like "Power Kanji for the JLPT". It had the whole lot for all levels, complete with the (essential) stroke order charts, common compounds and various kinds of index in the back, by stroke order, radical and proficiency test level. It was only a paperback and cost me less than Y2000.
I think the 100 kanji for level 4 means those 100 are ALL the possible ones that could appear in the test, but you would not be tested on all of them. You could take the test knowing a fair bit less than 100, but still pass comfortably. I say that for reassurance, I don't mean to suggest you shouldn't bother learning the kanji. Bearing in mind that in the test (even at level 1) you only have to recognise kanji, NOT write them, getting 100 under your belt is not so difficult at all.

I would still strongly advise that you need a textbook or reference book that teaches you the stroke order for you to practise writing them. You don't need to do this in the test, but I found that was how to remember them easily. Rather like you remember directions to somewhere so much better when you've actually followed them than if you've only just looked at the map. |

| I use those cards and they're fantastic. I like to pull'em out on my lunch break and go through and review them. |
