| Alcohol is illegal but available. The same applies to many other things that are in theory 'haram'. |

What do you mean by "allowed"? The country has one set of laws, so how can it be allowed in compounds?
But in practice, compounds are like mini-"normal" countries. People make their own alcohol, gallons upon gallons, even bathtubs full (depends on compound). Some make only for themselves and the parties, some make it to sell it as well. Other sorts of "moral crimes" also go on inside compounds. So, unless someone gets robbed or assaulted, etc, the police and the religious police have no jurisdiction inside. Women can walk freely without abayas, talk to men, swim in pools, workout in a mixed gym, etc.
But I must emphasize, don't get scared or something. It is not like they are dens of vice. Far from it; in fact, if anything, they are far cleaner, morally speaking, than general society here. And far more conducive to living, as I explained in my long post.
Now, I don't know about the KFS compound. You have to find out about it. Does it have extensive landscaping, games/sports facilities, pools, gym, shop, restaurant, salon, etc? If it is just a bunch of prefabricated houses on dirt surrounded by barbed wire, then you are better off living outside. |

wow is that ever interesting and EXTREMELY useful. I really appreciate everyone's help. I am Muslim and alcohol is not something we want our children to be around, so again thanks for the info, I really do appreciate the eye opener. I think we'll try and find a place on our own. By any chance is there classifieds online or do you just have to wait until you get there and stay in a hotel for a while until you find something??
Again, thanks to everyone who helped, |

Again, I am afraid you are misunderstanding me.
Yes, people do make and drink alcohol, but it is not something you will find in the open/public places of the compound. People do all that inside their places, not while outside in the pool/gym/resaurant/etc area. After all the time I have spent on various compounds, either living in them, or visiting people, I don't think I ever saw alcohol out in the open areas. And neither did I ever come across a drunk person.
So, if that's what's going to keep you away, that's just a shame, because as I said, women and children rot and fatten up inside apartments. See my post on the previous page where I quoted myself to see all the mental, physical, and emotional advantages of living in a compound.
In the end, it is up to you, but I think for yourself and for your children, you should stay in the provided compound.
BTW, where are you now? No matter in which country, I am sure your kids are already exposed to alcohol and alcohol ads. |

Thanks for the clarification, I do appreciate your help.
I'm in the US right now and yes you are absolutely right my children do see ads etc here for alcohol, it's everywhere. You can't even go to the grocery store without seeing aisle upon aisle of alcohol. My children are very young though and don't understand yet and that is why we're hoping to move to Saudi before they're old enough to understand. I know Saudi is far from being free from faults but after having visited there a couple times it beats the alternative of staying here. |

Yeah don't worry... there is nothing of that sort here, whether in a compound or out.
Again, I don't know why I care so much about your children and you (maybe because I grew up in an apartment here and my parents still live in one, and I have seen how it has affected the physical and mental well-being of my mother and me and my siblings), but I would seriously suggest you stay in the compound.
But, you REALLY should find out what is inside the compound, as compounds can differ a lot. Search for threads titled "KFS" or "Faisal" and you will get LOTS of threads about KFS. See if you can find relevant info about the compound in there. If not, post in those threads and bring them back up, and someone is sure to respond. Or, send personal messages to the KFS teachers in those threads, and ask them about the compound.
Good luck! |

thanks for the useful info. i will do as you suggested. So where exactly are you at now?
Nothing is set in stone yet, but just in case we'd like to be somewhat prepared.
Again, I really do appreciate your help,
take care |

I am in Jeddah. Lived my whole life here, except for 6.5 years in the US and 1 year in Turkey. Currently living in an apartment as my current employer does not provide a compound, and the housing allowance is not enough to get a place in one. But, hoping to be in a compound again within a year.
You are welcome, and you take care too! |

If you're worried about your kids being exposed to alcohol then maybe a compound is not for you and your family. On my compound most of the drinking and partying went on in the bachelor area but even where the families had their villas there were parties and barbecues where the home-made beer and wine flowed freely. If you do choose a compound, remember you'll probably be living amongst Americans, Europeans, Australians etc. who see nothing wrong with having a glass of wine or beer in front of their kids. |

I doubt she will be going to those parties/bbqs or socializing with those people
Again, not all compounds are the same. She needs to contact KFS teachers through this website, and find out the specific conditions on the KFS compound. |

Good observation trapezius....yeah, those bbq's are not top on my list.
I contacted a KFS member, we'll see what they have to say.
Thanks again for the info |
