GDL has great nightlife...straight, gay, or mixed. There's a place I like called La Jaula, somewhere in the centre. On culture, Jalisco claims to be the most Mexican of Mexican (machismo, marriachi, tequila, etc) but it is modern in many respects.

I'll let the GDL folk answer your second question.

I know what mariachi and tequila is, but what about machismo? I thought that was when guys act tough and macho.

We go to Guadalajara for the music scene now and again. Haven't noticed anyone in particular displaying much machismo, other than the bus drivers. Wink

Most places will require you to work spilt shifts which does take a bit of getting used to. This makes a busy social life somewhat difficult, timewise and money. It depends what you mean by socialising really.

In many respects Gdl is more expensive than Mexico City (never been to Monterrey) and you could easily spend a lot of money on a night out if you go to clubs and trendy bars. There's other stuff to do though, like cinemas, local bars, wandering around plazas, eating out, all of which are cheaper and more fun in my opinion Wink

I guess it depends what you like doing...

If you decide to live in Guadalajara, you should consider living near the downtcentre as you'll save money on public transport. The clubs and bars in the towncentre are cheaper than in other areas of the city. A beer should cost an average of 1.5 USD. Also, in that area, there's a very good gay club, Circus, (kind of straight-friendly circuit club) with a cover of 3 USD, at least that's what I paid some months ago. Another very cheap and vibrant venue is La Mutualista, a very popular bar among rock fans and hippies. So if you are short of money, there are places where you can go without spending that much money.

The nightlife is good. I was there for the month of July. La Mutualista on Madero Street is a good club. Thursdays are Cuban nights. There is a good rock/jazz club called Scratch on Federalismo. The big street with a lot of bars in one place is called Calle 2. There are a ton of bars there. If you like gay bars, you will find a plethora of great gay bars. Just go in one and grab one of those pamplets that tell you where everything is. If there happens to be a band called Sussie 4 that is playing a concert while you are there you seriously should not miss it. Belanova is the singer for that band.
