I'm taking my wife with me to Japan, I'm sure I've read on here somewhere that spouses can get part-time work, I just want to confirm that. BTW she will not be working as an English teacher but she does have a University degree.

Your wife can get a dependent's visa as long as you have a work visa. Spouse visas are for people married to Japanese citizens. It is not automatic, but your wife can apply for permission to work, up to (I think) 20 hours a week. Check with the Japanese embassy in your home country or the immigration department if you are in Japan now to be sure.

On a spousal visa, your wife will be able to make up to 1,000,000 yen before having to pay taxes. At least that's what I was told by a friend here and is the guideline we are using. Someone correct me if this is wrong.
My wife is also working p/t here on a spousal visa.

Are you Japanese Gordon? Otherwise your wife must have a dependent's visa.

Sorry, it must be a dependent's visa. I was a little tired last night. Embarassed BTW, I'm not Japanese or else I'd have chosen an easier English name to pronounce in Japanese for myself.

Gordon's figure for earnings on a dependant's visa is near the one I was quoted which is 1,100,000. I got this by phoning the International Centre in Nagoya. That 100,000 can make all the difference. BTW, if your wife makes more than this, as mine did a couple of years ago, expect to be hammered for tax about six months later as we were Crying or Very sad
