1. If you ever find yourself in Rakvere, Estonia, there is an English-style pub (called "Inglise Pubi" if I remember) that is a spitting image of a real one. Right down to the vinyl-covered seating. The food is pretty good, and so is the service - a rarity in Estonia.
People from Rakvere tell me that an Englishman settled there and opened the place himself.
2. There is a place in Kolkja, Estonia called "The Fish and Onion Restaurant". You might have to rent a car to get to Kolkja - it is one of the Russian Old Believers villages near Lake Peipsi, about 50km from Tartu. Once you get into Kolkja, the restaurant is a bit hard to find. The exterior is a blue color, and the sign merely says "Restoran". Once you go through the doors, there is a small lobby with about five unmarked wooden doors. The fun part is trying to find the correct door to the restaurant. Once you do, it is a very interesting-looking place, with pictures and traditional costumes et. al. The menu is in Estonian, Russian, and English. And you guessed it; the menu is various fish and onion dishes. The onions come from local farmers and the fish comes from Lake Peipsi. Order the tea also - it comes in a big metal pot and you drink it with caramel-flavored sugarclumps. Very cool place. |

| Damn! A buddy and I drove right by it two days ago on our way to Narva when we took a detour to see the castle in Rakvere. It was early, around 10ish, so we didn't stop but now I wish we had. By the way, if you want an interesting experience, try the Ranna Club in Sillame. |
