I'd still trust the newer buildings-- at least they are supposedly engineered with earthquakes in mind. In fact, I don't know if this is really true or just something they say to sell buildings. A lot of ones that fell in the last earthquake were allegedly earthquake safe, but afterwards were found to be pretty shoddy and buildres had just bribed inspectors, big surprise.

But of course it also depends where the building is-- hills, bedrock, sand, landfill...

Also, buildings that seem to have stood the test of time could have been seriously damaged in an earthquake, but that damage won't be evident till there's another one. Also, if you look carefully at older buildings, you can see quite a lot of patchwork where things cracked and broke in the last one...

From a geological point of view, the Asian side is far safer when it comes to earthquakes. For the houses, I'd go for buildings that the architect designed for him/herself, as they're far more likely to have proper columnar support and, crucially, tied walls. In the 99 quake, we were fortunate to live in the flat below the guy who'd built the place, and just above our local friendly university geophysicist. Our place survived, 'but if it had gone on for five more seconds, we'd all be jam!', as the latter put it.

Its so nice to see so many of you finally coming around to the advantages of the Asian side over the so called developed Euro side.

So for all of you who are thinking of coming over here's a list of why you should
1. Car Parking (don't laugh you will buy a car one day)
2. Green space - park areas. (again important for those with kids)
3. Better water-gas and electricity connections
4. More shopping centers(good on a hot summer day)
5. Well laid out neighbourhoods
6. Safe and clean streets
7. Cheaper and better quality properties
8. Moda Park and sea front
9. Good connections to the Euro side
10. It's not full of white Euro trash who walk up and down Taksim
