This is just a theoretical scenario. It only has limited anecdotal support.
Marcia is white and from an English speaking country. She's keen to try her hand at teaching English in China. She's an attractive and well spoken young woman, and Zhou Baijiu, a language school owner, thinks she'd be good for business. The problem is that she has no parchments that could be used to convince the Labor Bureau that she meets government requirements.
No problem. Mr Zhou's got a stack of them on his hard drive. He photoshops Marcia's name onto one of them, and hey presto, she gets an FEC. He doesn't tell her he's done this, as apparently some Westerners have strange ideas, and may not like to be implicated in forgery.
So Marcia tells her friends she's teaching in China and qualifications aren't needed. She posts on here to the same tune, and even dumps, very politely, on those who suggest that they are.
A possibility?[/b] |
This is exactly what is happening I've seen the software that was being used to do this in a Chinese Helper teachers office. They asked me some question about US universities. I noticed it had templates and some type of Font ID and matching program. It was written in Chinese and originally was sold to produce Fake (Western) degrees for Chinese students.
Of course the later use was to make them for FT's too. I told them, "That program would not fool very many people and I could easily spot a fake."
A few hours later they printed me up a Doctorate Degree from my Masters degree. The were able to scan my masters on file, ID the Font used, and Change Masters to Doctorate degree in XXXXX.
Of course it looked real and they said a good print shop would make the better parchment with seals and ribbons. (Just like the original)
I was impressed and found out that this software was one they got from another person at one of the leading universities that was hiring foreign teachers.
If this was the common practice and used, I'm not sure. I do know if you can boost the education level of your foreign teachers this could boost potential earnings for having a "Well Qualified Staff" as a program marketing tool.
I tried to get a CD of this program, but the assistants played "Deaf and Dumb" when I wanted to look it again a few days later. Someone must have told them it was taboo to have let me see this bootleg software.
If low level Teacher Helpers can produce high quality fakes from templates from most of the top 500 Western Universities, or scan any copy and change it too look real, well you know the bigger boys have this ability too. |

I was making 950,000 won plus accommodation at my first job $1500 Australian and only teaching for a few hours a week.
The EPIK program for public schools started about 1994 or a bit earlier and was paying $2,000 US a month plus airfares and an apartment. |
Seems like the job ads state the same salary levels , most a few higher at 1 million to 2 million won which at the top end still is around 2000 USD a month. (Hours are much longer now)
I guess another example of world flat wages. 2000 USD in 1990 though went further than 2000 USD in 2007.
I wonder what the Chinese FT teaching salaries will be at in 2015?
That is the magical year China is supposed to beat the US economy as No 1 in the world.
How many want to guess to will still be around the same level as now?
Mayve this is a good poll question. |

2015? Considering America's economy currently is still 6 to 7 times larger than China's I seriously doubt that will happen. China's economy would need to increase significantly more than 11% a year to pass the US in 2015. By 2015 China is predicted to pass Japan and become the second largest economy. I've heard it's suppose to be around 2040 when China is going to pass the US economically. However that is still a bold prediction.
As for salary levels in 2015, I am going to guess there will still be white monkey's coming over for the China experience working for the standard 4000RMB. Can't really see that changing. |

Yea I think you're right it was for Japan in 2015 with estimates at 2040-50 for USA.
4000 RMB a month for 30 hours per week, shared housing sounds about right. |

I suspect most people who chose to be an FT in China - don't do it because the want to really be an FT, but more because they want to find a way of visiting/living in China. So in the Korea/China choice - China will probably attract more FT's - regardless of pay levels - because as a destination it has more pulling power. |

That would be the case with pretty well anyone and everyone teaching ESL in another country. |

I think you'll find a few nuts who have a specific agenda that shoves the visiting/living in China factor into a second place - most notable being the missionary types who pollute the EFL world!!!! |

At one school they wanted a copy of my degree for the visa/residence permit process. But I only had my academic transcript. "No problem, we can use the transcript as a template and make up a degree on the computer".
They also "fixed up" my c.v so that I had 2 years teaching experience, not 18 months. |

EPIK nowadays. I hear 25 hours a week but! Half medical insurance also.
The level on position that was $2,000 US to start with is now 2,500 won.
2,500,000.00 KRW = 2,708.302 USD Remember but the US dollar has dropped a lot in recent years. At one stage however during the IMF crises it was 2,000,000 won to $1,000 US
