miski, why do I sense some defensiveness on your part?

Know this:

2 wrongs don't make a right.

I am saying "A is wrong", and instead of focusing on that (which happens to be the thread topic), you go on and say "Yeah, but B is wrong too".

Yeah so? Who is talking about B? We are talking about A.

That excuse has been around forever!! In Egypt in the 80's the weekend was Friday and Sunday - with having to work on Saturday. Ridiculous...

And it is the reason that it has been Thursday and Friday for the last years around the Gulf. Finally the power of international business has been able to over-rule the religious authorities.

That is what this is all about...

Well? What do you think? Whose opinions should prevail? The beardies or the greedy capitilists?

Ya Sheikh,

To be completely honest, like Miski, I couldn't care less what days of the week I work as long as the 'weekend' is two consecutive days. Cool

It seems that in the Gulf the 'bankers' have won... we shall see if they do in KSA too.

I believe that they're drumming at their own tune in the KSA and, even thought they're no longer "guiding" any other country regarding the weekend, it's important to keep that faade.

Regardless of bankers or religion, I do care when the weekend falls, so I can visit family on their weekend in the Middle East, and it does make it easier to "plan" (always difficult here in the Gulf) for holidays.

As far as we're concerned in Kuwait, Miski, the new weekend should come into effect on 1 September, as ALL newspapers announced THIS week, not in July. But, again, maybe by next week, this entire thread might well be outdated...

Well Sharko if that is the case, I would be delighted , then I will have a 3 day weekend to kick ff-just quoting what we were told in June and what the KTs said in July.

However( as this is a teaching forum), the Kuwait Times reported this on August 4th:

''KUWAIT: The Secretary at the Civil Services Commission Mohammad Al-Roumi announced that Saturday September 1, 2007 would be the first day of rest for all government employees, and the last Thursday as a day of rest would be August 30, 2007.

He said that a circular from the Civil Services Commission, to that effect, would be issued soon adding that the Ministry of Education would also take Saturday as a day of rest, but would observe Thursday as a working day.

EXACTLY: Thursday as a working day. That means, that as of 1 September, Thursday will be a normal working day. Therefore, people in our trade would enjoy a long 3-day weekend. I believe our interpretation skills need to be worked on. Wink

I think I must agree with trapezius. Is it only me or is there some touchy defensiveness in the air?

Thanks for answering my question, everyone. And thanks for all the colorful, slightly-off-topic commentary, too Very Happy

Actually Sharko, I think we are reading two different views into the statement.I think they mean that altho' the first Saturday is a holiday for govt employees, the previous Thursday will remain a working day for Ministry of Education. ( so no 3 day weekend). But as I say, I could be wrong. We will have to see. I shall find out when I start back on 28th.

I'm not defensive about anything. Re the previous poster's remarks about the zealot mullahs of RSA, I simply countered them with one about the paedophile mullahs of the US. I then said that every religion has its zealots and hypocrites

We could avoid controversy by abolishing the weekend.

Don't give them any ideas Scot... they have already done so for the majority of the imported workers.
