Hi all,
Has anybody heard of or worked at Xiangnan University, Chenzhou city in southern Hunan. I've done some search but can't find much on the city. I'd appreciate any info on the school or the city life.
Thanks |

It is located in a very quiet city in Hunan. The FAO and his staff are quite nice people. The salary they offer is "average" for Hunan (and I suppose the rest of the country) but it has great buying in Chenzhou. Mind you, for rarer things or Western items you will have to go to either ChangSha or to Guangzhou and both are accessible by train.
The university is set against mountains -- with lots of trees, etc., etc. The foreign teachers' accommodations are standard, surely I have seen a lot worse -- and Fiona -- the FAO responsible for housing issues -- will really try hard to please you.
It is probably a third-tier university and it draws almost all of its student from the immediate surrounding local areas.
It is not a nightlife city -- that is for sure -- but there are numerous cheap restaurants around that actually offer very good local cooking.
They have a very traditional hiring process -- paperwork, medical in ChangSha, etc., etc.
All-in-all, if you like the outdoors, and if you have bicycle, and if you want to feel a little bit special in an area that has not become sick-to-death of foreigners, I might suggest it.
Hunan weather is capricious at best. The summers are long, humid and very hot. Spring and autumn tend to come and go in the bat of an eyelid. Winter is very, very, very rainy and thus dark and damp and it lasts easily from the beginning of December until the middle or end of March.
Any other questions, please PM me.
All the best,
HFG |

Thanks for all the info HFG. It sounds a bit like the city I was in Guizhou. I had a great time there except that it was freezing in winter and social life was restricted to meals with the students and watching DVDs! I'm afraid it is going to be the same in Chenzhou, no? |

Guizhou? Freezing in winter? Man oh man, you ought to try spending a winter in Dongbei (except Dalian) like Shenyang (humid and cold) or Changchun (dry and freezing). You should compare Guiyang's winter at http://www.worldweather.org/001/c00548.htm with that of Changchun's at http://www.worldweather.org/001/c00541.htm |

It's all relative to where you're from, obviously.
You were two posts behind your master there TW. Liven up. |

HFG since you told us yesterday that good info shouldn't be too dated - could you tell when you last visited this school and talked to the staff. After all you seem to have so much first had info you must be literally flying from one location to another!!!! |

And my last dealings with them are less than six-weeks old and we still exchange correspondence.
Now I'll let you return to cutting out paper angels in your kindergarten. Or is it paper devils? It's only fair that I don't take up so much of your time. [/img] |

Dear HFG,
not wishing to be too nosy -
is your correspondence (I take it you've never visited the place) with this institution with regard to finding work there - or are you helping them with their recruiting problems?
After all in a very recent post you've also been offering another poster contact with a school in Kunming (in fact you seem to offer a great number of jobs around) - and many of the readers here do like to know if they're reading posts from teachers or recruiters (kinda helps us sort out the agenda behind the post).
All the best

Dear Vik,
Thank you for taking your time away from your kinesthetic activities to answer my post.
No, I NEVER, EVER, EVER think that you are prying...believe me, kind, wonderful friend that you are, lots of words come to mind, but surely that is not one of them, although, of course, there are numerous others, perhaps not as laudatory as you may wish.
As for "agenda", there is none, except simple kindness and an ability to help those who ask. Some flame, some trash, some snipe, some like to be bipolar and log-on with many screen personalities, some get drunk and then come to here to write nasty things, but me, personally, I really prefer to try to help but selectively so.
Unfortunately, you are just not one of those whom I prefer to help and I feel truly disobliged to be summoned to answer anything of yours.
All the best, of course,
HFG |
