Greetings,
So a quick background, I am a certified teacher in California, I have been teaching a combination of ESL, public school and at international schools in Asia for the past five years. Not to mention a couple of years of experience in the USA. I am considering coming to the Middle East for a year or two to make money. Is this possible? Are there lucrative markets there. I would prefer working at an international school, but this is definately a making money trip so anything is fine. After a year or so I would return to China. Is this possible in the Middle East? Thoughts?

You sound very well qualified to teach in a number of international schools. What's your timeline? You've missed the recruitment for the 2007-2008 academic year, and though there are some schools still looking, your best bet is to attend job fairs in jan/feb 2008. Feel free to PM me for more details on where you can teach in the UAE (or Egypt).

The international school fairs are empty these days as all teachers have headed to China for the latest expansion of schools, packages etc.

You should be looking in your own backyard for opportunities in the International IB or AP schools field !

To be honest after you factor in the cost of living you may be better off financially in China. Most international school salaries and packages in the Gulf are not significantly better than those offered in Asia and have not been keeping up with inflation. You can make good money tutoring, but I don't think the trade off in terms of lifestyle is worth it. In fact, the majority of teachers who left my school last June are now in Asia (lots in China now actually) pursuing better opportunities. There is a solid chance I will be following then next year.
