i'm in Lima, where it was a 6. It was about a minute and there have been four aftershocks. People panic here and run out of the houses. The security guard and police shouted at us to open the windows and go down to the street. It's been registered at 7.9 by Washington and there's a tsunami warning. Classes are also cancelled nation-wide. |

Naturegirl, I am glad you are all right. I posted up on the general discussion board about it. Is everyone in your family OK? How is your house?
Why did they tell you to come outside? In Japan we were told not to go outside right afterwards because aftershocks and debris can fall on people. Do be careful!
We just had 2 earthquakes in the last 24 hours here and we had a tsunami warning because of the quake in Peru (it was called off). Schools were off yesterday and today because of the hurricane. A new lava vent opened at the Kiluaea crater. What is happening on this planet?

They tell us to go outside because they panic about earthquakes. I guess they think that building are going to collapse and they want you close to the ground. |

Be careful,as you may know, the building may not be as sound after an earthquake and aftershocks can therefore cause considerable more damage than the original quake. |

I hope everyone is ok over there...
Oddly, I've been expecting a quake here all week. I wish there was a clear science to prediction, but as mentioned by a poster in Hawaii, they were hit with one this week as was Indonesia some days before. The Pacific Rim is certainly an active place. |

Guy, me too! I've had that, were about to have a quake feeling since last week. You know the hair on your arms stands up and you feel aprehensive. Maybe it's just because it's been more than a year since we've had one I've felt. I get nervous when tension builds up in the fault.
Naturegirl, glad to hear you are alright, I hope the damage wasn't too bad. |

I'm glad to hear that you and your family are fine. I just read an on-line news article that said that most of the damage, quite devastating damage, happened in villages and towns south of Lima. At last count, over 450 people have died and thousands have lost their homes. |
