As far as I know, Iquique is pretty cool. It's more arrid, as far as I know, but I found that out by youtube.com-ing most of Chile, to get a better idea of what things look like.

I believe it's a good spot to hang out, but a friend who spent some time there said it's a little dull and isolated for long-term living. But, he also said he thought Santiago was too much, like you said. So....the Lake District is supposed to be great. I think that's where I'm headed with EOD. Suerte!

Most of the cities in the northern part of Chile are not really great for long term stays. Check out Valdivia in the Lakes Region, that is a cool city. Puerto Montt is blah and there are a bunch of small towns near Puerto Montt that are nice but probably not for a long stay. Beware though, it rains a lot down there, like the Northwestern states in the US with two or three times as much rainfall per year. There's not many gringos down there so if there are teaching opportunities, they're probably starving for native speakers.

If you ever come to Iquique, please let me know. I would like to take some lessons to improve my conversation and pronunciation skills. I can exchange them for some Spanish practice or we can arrange a fee.

I was told that Iquique is like Arica...only not as nice...I wouldn't recommend living in Arica...so you can make your own conclusions. It'll be dry up there though.
